I recently purchased a 2006 LS430 with 29,500 miles and the factory warranty runs out in August of 2009.
What is the current thinking about extending the warranty?
If extending is a good idea, what would be best and at what cost, a Lexus dealer warranty or on-line warranties?

To purchase an extended warranty at this point from Lexus for 3 years or 100,000 total miles will probably run you $2500+. And, the clock for this would start TODAY (the day you purchase), which means that you're extending your "basic" warranty by only another 2 years and 2 months, while the powertrain almost nothing.
So, you have to ask yourself, are $2500 of total items going to break in the next three years (not including powertrain, because still under factor warranty really) or 100K total miles (if you even drive that much). Keep in mind, maintenance and wear-n-tear items (i.e. tires, brakes, windshield) are not included in the coverage.
For me, the warranty is purely for "sound of mind" to know that if something does happen, you're covered.... but the odds of you using the warranty will be very slim to recover the cost.

I bought an extended warranty from the private dealer I purchased from. I was understandably skeptical about the private warranty, so I called several Lexus dealers around the state and every one of them said they take this warranty all the time without any problem. I haven't had the occasion to use it yet as my factory warranty is in effect for a few more months, but it's nice to know I'll be insured to 100,000 miles. I payed about $1500 for it.
As I've said in prior posts on the subject, these warranties are an insurance policy, nothing more or less. You're protecting yourself from a potential large loss, but it's very possible you will not break even. For me, as I'm going to have this car for several years, and the LS has a whole bunch of very expensive components, it is worth the peace of mind.

EXACTLY !!! Everything in life is how much you are confortable with, and how big a "gambler" you are. Like timing belts... some say change at 60K, manual says 90K or whatever, some users have gone over 120K and swear by them. This is why some people go to Vegas, and others don't.
I got mine through the dealer (non-Lexus) and the company is Universal Underwriters (now Zurich) and Lexus in my area takes them. Only thing is that if I do the warranty at Lexus, there is $100 deduct. and Lexus dealer has to contact them first, get approval, and warranty company pays Lexus.
Anyway, it's not all a big scam, just have to look and get some advise.
