Default delayed starting a bit

hi folks

i have 01 LS430 bought it a year ago. i have posted then few questions and i am grateful for the answers i got that time which were really appreciated.

i have occasionally delayed starting, but not always. when i bought a year ago it was bad one, but changed battery, plugs, fuel filter and it was normal and also chekced it with dealer and they said cranking within 5 seconds which is normal.

it is getting clod now and yesterday i noticed delayed starting which worries me because i amy end up damaging the starter.

has any one familar with this and what items need to checked in squence?

the second question is the error P0440 (evaporite emission control system) it keeps coming and when i go it scanned it the same error. is this error a a big problem. the dealer told me not serious.

many thanks

I don't know... 5 seconds is a LOOOOONG time to be cranking. My LS doesn't fire up with the first 'crank' sound, but it takes no more than 2 seconds to fire up. Just do a quick look at your watch, 5 seconds is long. If it really is taking you 5 seconds, something is not right.

As for the P0440 error, never had it so don't know.

My 2002 cranks on 2nd turnover which is about 2 seconds.
My 1993 LS400 with 225,000 used to crank on 1st turnover in about 1 second.
So I'd be worried too if it takes 5 seconds. Seems too long.
Good Luck.

Default Try this.........

Sounds like a dirty throttle body. I can't believe the Lexus dealer said this was normal. Many Toyota's like the V6 Camry/Sienna/ES300's do this after 100-140,000km (60-80,000mi). You can do it yourself inabout 20-25 minutes with some throttle body cleaner and a clean rag or a small tooth brush. You might want to remove the air filter & loosen the air filter box, before disconnecting the air tube to the throttlle body. Remember this car has an electronic throttle, so the best way to open the throttle valve is to turn the ignition key to on (engine not running) and have someone else press the gas pedal (don't close it on your fingers!). Spray & wipe the throttle valve & body untill its clean, (not too much cleaner, as you can flood the engine!) and move the gas pedal several times, to make sure its free. Put every thing back together, then start the car. Make sure you don't disconnect the Mass Air Flow meter (on the intake tube) with the key ON, or you will throw a code & turn on the "Check Engine" light. After a few seconds the car should run smooth, but it might not idle right for a day, untill the computer learns the throttle flows more air. If it idles too high after a day, disconnect the battery for 30 seconds. Let me know if this works.
