andy: true. i was afraid of any rust issues from cutting the fenders/paint. i really didn't want to pay to get them repainted. but you are right...less risk of damaging them.
jun: i think the heat gun is absolutely needed. it makes the paint and metal soft so you are able to bend it = less risk for damage

 

I am not a fan of rolling. It CAN work out well on some vehicles, but it's a crap shoot too much of the time, and especially on a car like the LS where people typically don't have prior experience and your car is their gueina pig, or it's YOUR gueina pig if you're doing it yourself. I've seen numerous roll-jobs -- a relatively high percentage even of those done by professionals -- that resulted in ripples and obvious cosmetic issues afterwards such as you pointed out on yours. Also, from what I've seen, on many vehicles the paint is likely to crack later, even if you use a heat gun at the time of the rolling.

I'd rather cut the lip carefully with a 4.5" angle grinder, then sand, primer, and touch up the raw edge, all of which can safely and successfully be done by any amature so long as you are careful and use common sense.

You can avoid dimples by shaving fenders. It's cleaner and you get more clearance. Lexus fenders are too thick in the rear to roll IMO.

 

Yea I've noticed that Lexus fenders are tougher....and has these little plastic things you got to work with as well...

 

^ as thick/tough as the fenders look they were fairly easy to bend using the heat gun. After removing those plastic things the metal(where the plastic things are connected) is significantly weaker = dimples. If it weren't for that, I think I wouldve been dimple-free!

yeah man look real nice, good job considering. i could barely even see that dimple and wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out but i'm sure since you know where it is then it always catches your eye (i'm the same exact way).

rolled fenders is a must for a car with big rims & a drop!!!
