Default Pneumatic trunk struts - are they supposed to open the trunk?

I've noticed that my trunk struts don't do much of anything except make it difficult to open and close my trunk. Is this how they are supposed to work or should they open the trunk once the hatch is released?

they do not open the trunk. They are there to make it easier to lift the trunk lid and also give you much more trunk room. Look at the average car and the trunk supports are usually U shaped brackets that extend into the trunk. They take up alot of room not counting the torsion springs under the rear deck. The struts are a sign of a good car. Notice they are also used on the hood.

The struts won't open trunk more than 4-6 inches. They merely assist in lifting and keeping it from dropping quickly when closing. Old struts will allow the lid to fall when it is about 18 inches vertically open. They also make the lid much heavier when opening.

I just put new struts on my 04 a few months ago at about 50,000 miles and it made a lot of difference.

I guess I should replace my struts then - as my trunk def. feels heavy when opening. Thanks for the heads-up!
