Default Can I lock my LS from outside when the engine is running?

Its going to be "our first winter together" and I was wondering if there is a way to start the car and lock it from the outside so that it can warm up in the morning without someone driving it away. The smartkey system is pretty smart in preventing something like this from happening, but has anyone found a loophole?

Great question...I just ran outside and tried a bunch of experiments, even clicking the LOCK button on the keyfob several times, manually pushing the door lock button on the drivers door, etc, hoping it would lock the doors but it didn't.

I DID find that, with the engine running, you can MANUALLY lock the doors with the traditional (metal key) portion of the key. Then...to unlock, you need to use the traditional key portion again and manually unlock it.

There still might be another way with the remote fob, but I didn't seem to find one...plus it's chilly outside right now.

Have your wife in the car and wait for you... That is the only way I know of to lock it again. If the doors are closed and someone is inside to lock it.

LOL. You must not be married or divorced.

Neither, I'm actually quite happily married. I don't do what I preach. I actually am the one that goes out in 20 degree weather to start the car up for my wife. I'm her manual "auto-start"...

roll down your windows, go outside stick hand in and lock, roll windows up and pull hand out. then have to use the physical key to open the door.

You get points for creativity, but the reality is, if the car is not garaged, there will be times when you can't roll the window down because it's frozen in place.

Best bet is to use the metal (key) portion of the keyfob to lock her up...HOWEVER...I found the smart key (proximity) does not work when you return to unlock her. You must use the metal (key) portion of the fob to unlock her.

Ara, thanks for your experimentation. I guess I can settle for locking/unlocking with the metal key.

I will have a remote starter (comes with my new alarm system & pager) installed this week. This high-end alarm system is able to "learn" the starter code as to never needing the smartkey.

The doors will be locked and the alarm will still be armed.

I'll let you know how it works out!

Interesting post. I found this to be annoying myself on certain occasions, especially since the smart key system allows the car to be driven with out the key actually in the car.

I have not tried this myself, but you might be able to turn off the smart key access (which is rather easy to do) after starting it, then be able to lock the keys with the fob. I'll have to try this next time I get into my car.

Everyone get remote starter like AudioBuff and myself and it will solve all of your problems. And it will help put money in my pocket.
