My opinion is that the OEM engine filter was designed just fine. I would not use K&N - they are more expensive, require maintenance, and has the potential for the filtering oil to get into places it shouldn't be, causing adverse effects.
I just installed a new OEM engine filter. Also installed new cabin filter, front seat filters, and rear cabin filter, all ordered from Carson Toyota (http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=214915), who had the lowest prices for most of the items I required. They also happen to sponsor some parts of clublexus.com.

Hi all,
don't have a Lexus yet, but I am looking at a 98 LS or possibly a '01 LS.
I used a K&N in a Suzuki Samurai for a while and I believe thatthis finished off the motor.
Here you have a rather thorough read about the K&N myth (and a lot of other aftermarket super filters!):

(mods: this link has been sent all over the internet forum world - so I hope this is okay .....)
To reinforce the fact, that air filters account mostly for the smallest part of intake restriction, go to
http://autospeed.com/
and brouse through the DIY section, search for intake, airfilter, ram air, etc.... - opens up your eyes big time!
E.g. In most cars the air filter acounts for less than 3% of the total intake resistance from the air intake to the manifold.
So most of the resistance is somewhere else:
Restricted intake, badly positioned intake, MAF, TB, corrugated hoses, etc.
So if the airfilter accounts only for 3 or 4%, how much do you gain if K&N increases flow by 30%?? 30% of 4% total is just about 1% increase on the total ...... + reduced filtering capability + cost .....
I don't think it's worth it!
I fell for the spell too, some time ago!
Mainly based on the beautifully seductive website they have!
If you want to believe it, it is very easy to fall for it!
But always remember: "If it is too good to be true, mostly it is!!"
I don't know yet what kind of filter the 430s use (flat panel or round), but if you are not happy with the OEM (Toyota), try a Toyota Airfilter for a Diesel engine, ...if it by chance fits. Excellent quality, cleanable....
Cheers,
