So my 06 LS has the smart key access. What happens if I am driving along and I throw the smart key out the window? Does the car abruptly turn itself off while driving? Does it continue to run until I stop it and shut it off manually? Less prosaically I guess the same thing (figuratively) would occur if the smartkey fob electronics decided to catastrophically fail and shutdown as you were driving down the highway at 70mph - what would happen?

My mom has an 04 and for her car you are able to go inside with the key and the car will still run. I'm not sure about throwing it out the window but i think it will run until turned off.

The car will continue to run, until you shut it off.
If you've ever noticed when exiting (and it's still running), and the key is in your pocket (or somewhere on you)...after you close the door, the alarm will chime BEEP!...BEEP!...BEEP!
I'd guess that is the "warning" that the car does not detect the key, yet it's still running.
But to answer your question--No. It will not shut off abruptly if you're driving. It won't even shut off, unless you run out of gas or shut off via the ignition.
If the smart key electronics or battery does die in the smart key, you can still start the car by inserting the small narrow portion of the plastic keyfob into the ignition, then start her up.
Of course, if your doors are all locked, you'd have to extend the METAL portion of the key and unlock the door the conventional way before you can sit inside and start her up.

my old friend up at the car wash was telling me about one of his good friends last year that drove from annapolis all the way to their work up in baltimore about 45 mins to an hour in morning traffic. this guy apparenlty went out to his car before he left and it was all icy so he started up his car and went back inside for something and to let the car warm up, well in the process he left his key inside his house and drove all the way to work and didn't realize he had left the key at home until after he had turned the car off and then tried to lock the door... hmmmm.... well i hope this doesn't happen to anyone here or even to myself but it is somewhat of a funny story if you think about it. maybe i just have a strange sense of humor.

The wireless smart key UL has an adjustment for the lock/unlock beep volume, including it off entirely. It is located under the dash, just above the accelerator pedal. Its the rotating ****.

Step 1; Wake up.
Step 2: Walk downstairs and start the car without inserting the key in the ignition.
Step 3: Pull out the metal piece of the key.
Step 4: Get out of the car (very important. failure to do so will result in you sitting in the cold and make the following steps useless.)
Step 5: Insert the metal portion of the key in the door lock and turn to lock your vehicle.
Step 6: Walk back upstairs.
Even thou my car is just behind my house in the driveway i still lock it ( i know Paranoia)
I left my car on the street just outside my window one day and people walking by were like
