I don't use or rely on the computer averages, although I do think that the instantaneous mileage is a good learning tool for anyone interested in improving their mileage.
I think it is very beneficial to keep an auto journal in you glovebox and track mileage and tank average at every fill up. I'm kind of statistically minded and although I don't bother to make a statistical control chart of mileage, I do sort of visualize the variation and average from tank to tank. You can actually see the difference when your driving is weighted towards longer freeway miles than short stop and go traffic. Once you've done this for a few years and are aware of your mileage every time you fill up, it is easy to see why you got the mileage. This is important in that it gives you a warning when anything starts to go wrong and you can look for the problem.
Just my opinion and experience.

apprx 21.5 mpg in mixed driving, I keep the display on instantaneous mileage and it helps me drive with a soft foot if you know what I mean. I am currently experimenting with Quikstop 89 (midgrade) gas to see if I take a mileage hit.

I like making it go single digits in that mode.

My lifetime average is 20.1mpg according to the trip computer, but I came from an 06' Avalon that did 22mpg on the same route, so for a V8 this is quite good. On my trip from NC when I purchased the car, I averaged 26.5mpg occasionally hitting 80mph, but also with some stop-and-go DC traffic on my way to NJ. I am fairly confident that I can make 30mpg on pure highway with the low cd of this car. For comparison, the Avalon managed 32mpg on pure highway.

I used to get 22 local 27 freeway
then I put new tires lost 2mpg ( bridgestone serenty), belts,pump,brakes,flush tranny,rear end,etc
but I think doing a cleaning of the throttle plate thing and whatever they did to do an injector cleaning I lost about another 2mpg
so now...

I get about 18.5 mpg 100% local, with few lights. Then on all highway I get about 25 mpg doing 70 mph. Best was going down to Orlando, got like 27 mpg doing I don't even know what kind of driving, but it was really smooth and quick.
Mix driving I'm doing about 20 mpg.

I am only getting a bit under 17 atm, but that's all local and lots of short trips and lights. I think the frequent warm-up periods are murder from an economy perspective.

Warm ups and idling you're doing 0 mpg... so that definitely eats the mpg numbers fast. The discussion of warm up or not has been discussed here frequent too. Modern engines don't need the whole warm up until "normal" operating temperature deal. Let the oil pressure build up for like 30 seconds or so, then off you go. Drive slow the first 2-3 miles until warm and then blast off.
