Is the extra square in front of the emblem necessary? I want to swap out to an emblemless grill, but not sure how this would affect anything.

Yes, the square piece is a raydome for the PCS millimeter-wave radar. It's not just a piece of plastic, but made of a special material that allows the RF at that specific frequency pass through. The raydome protects the radar electronics from the elements while allowing RF to pass through. If you remove it, the PCS will likely fail due to weather=$$$$.

I don't know for it to fail in-definitely but there are a few members on here who took it off to run the emblem-less grille... maybe someone can chime in?

I looked at the back of it and was wondering if there was anything special about it since it didn't look clear and was "painted"

would believe they had tested the need for it before building them special,, if it would have worked fine with the regular emblem we all would have the same grill,, if you do not use it give a try but my $$$ says you will have issues,,
