Default Possible CPO Good Deal - 05 ML, 12K miles, $29K

If anyone is looking, this might be a worthwhile CPO car to call on.

Identical car to mine other than the year, price and mileage...I had a hard time finding the Millenium with Grey and Nav.

When I blow up the pics, it looks like it may have a number of scrapes on the bumpers and wheels.

Default Administration fee?

Hmmmmmm, located at the bottom of the write-up :

"All prices are plus $589.00 dealer admin fee."

Wonder what else lurks in the fine print. As soon as I see something like this, it's a deal breaker no matter how good the bottom line looks as there's no telling what else a dealer like this hasn't disclosed ...

Caveat emptor -

Then there's this caveat:

"Car may have minor road chips, light scratches, wheel scuffs, etc."

The $400-$600 admin fee is pretty standard these days. Sometimes they are negotiable, sometimes not. When I bought my LS remotely, I didn't chirp about it since it covered the Fedex charges, notary, title fiasco, etc.

Wow - it would be tough to hose the car up too much with only 12k miles. Mind you I have seen it done but its likely to be in really good shape at that mileage.

In terms of fees and such at the dealer - I make always make my offers like this "I will pay you exactly $28,000 plus tax and title, you work the numbers and paperwork any way you want to show your fees but that's my offer and it can't exceed $28,0000 - period."

When I was shopping for a used Subaru, I'd always offer $X out the door, including tax, fees, title, and plate xfer. The salesmen would stammer about how hard it was to calculate the actual sales price. Of course, I had the price and all the fees displayed on a spreadsheet on my iPad.

You'd think this is true... but i found a 2004 UL with 33k miles (in Oct 2009). Looked good in pics on the web. When i got there, the front end had been wrecked and about 40% of the car was repainted. Autocheck and Carfax were clean. After some close inspection, i saw overspray and lots of areas that had been fixed (structurally).

Sometimes a low mileage car has been sitting in a wrecking yard for months. Just never know.

ddlexus - good points - I agree its critical to know why the miles are so low.

When I purchased my LS430 a few months ago, the dealer also tried to collect close to $400 for the "fluff" fee. I absolutely refused and he took it off. No way would I ever pay for any kind of preperation fees for a new or used car. They are 100% additional profit.

With our cars the low miles are out there. I have an old lady on my block who is the original owner of a black 2005 GS300 with 9800 miles! She bought it new.

If that car was "real" it should be gone in almost no time. It would be equivalent to buying a relatively "new" car for less than half price that will last longer than most people will live.

When I was looking for my car last August I spotted an 06 LS430 in white with ecru interior with 6k miles on it that had just come up for sale that day. It was at a Carmax in South Florida. I called the dealer at 10am and asked the sales guy to get some info for me on the specific options on the car. He called back 90 min later and said the car had already sold. My experience is that the really good used cars (like really good resale houses) sell in a day or less.
