Trunk Lid hard to lift
When I open the trunk with the remote, the lid seems very heavy to lift. Is this normal or is it likely that that struts are shot. When it is opened with the remote is it meant to spring up and if so how far?

The struts in my 06 LS are fine - they hold the trunk lid open with no problem. But I have noticed that LS trunk lids in general feel way more heavy than standard cars. I think its due to the hinge mechanism it uses. I don't think new struts are going to make it feel less heavy unless the struts are truly worn out - raise the lid 3/4 ways up and see if the struts support it and let it close gently without dropping down hard.

Yes my struts hold the trunk open without problem, it is just the force needed to raise the lid itself that seems very heavy. I guess if the struts do not assist in reducing that force then new ones wouldn't make a difference. However, I am comparing with my old Infiniti Q45 where after popping the trunk you could lift the lid with one finger easily. My LS430 feels as if there is a 10lb weight on the lid in comparison.

The trunk lid is a bit heavy to lift compared to some other cars. I think the only ways to test if your struts are shot is by the the way Jabberwock stated and whether or not the trunk stays fully open on its own.
Part of me wishes it opened by itself on a spring the way the Cadillac DTS does.

I believe the struts main purpose is to support the trunk in its fully open position rather than assisting in opening the trunk. Other that a few inches of lift after the remote release the rest is up to the driver to fully open the trunk.
