Default How to tell real from faux leather ?

Hi All -

In maintaining interiors on our LS's, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between what's real and what's faux leather. I have a CL and would like to know simply because each requires different conditioners.

Since some are obvious and others not, is there any way to easily tell the difference? What about a schematic somewhere which points out the makeup of each segment

TIA for any suggestions -

i put the leather conditioner on all seat and door trim areas.it will not hurt vinyl if you apply it.

In my CL, everything that looks like leather may be leather. At least that's what it feels like to me. Some automakers use a very high quality synthetic in high-wear areas like the sides of seats and you can't easily tell by feel. Cadillac and Lincoln use a lesser quality synthetic that looks good, but can be identified by feel. My Subaru only has leather in the center and back of 4 seating positions. Everything else is sticky / cold vinyl.

I remember some years back ("in the day" as they say) there was a way to test for leather when dealing with NYC street vendors selling "leather" jackets on street corners there. You would ask him if you could light a match, blow it out, and immediately press the still-hot match head to the "leather". (A merely hot match head would do no damage to real leather.)

Most vendors wouldn't let you do it, of course.

So, in our case, we could do that in an inconspicuous spot - at the bottom of a seat, maybe ....... Who's goin' to be first ?

Pet hair sticks to anything man-made (fake leather, plastic, micro-fiber, nylon, etc.) like a magnet while it falls off real leather (you can literally blow it off a smooth leather surface).

I seriously doubt that there is any fake leather in my UL. I'm not even going to entertain the idea. My car has complete, full leather on all leather surfaces! And I'm happy and content.
