Default Replace Glass and Repair Laser Cruise Control Sensor

The Laser Cruise Control Sensor on my '02UL w/55k has a hole in it. I can bypass the radar feature (provided I remember when I start the car) to use the "regular" cruise control but I would still like the radar feature to work.

I have seen on this forum where others have replaced the broken glass to repair the sensor. Since a new sensor is about $1200, I am curious if anyone has had long term success with the repair? What type of glass did you use? Any tips would be appreciated, thxs.
