Welcome to CL!
You can search this forum for many threads about changing/upgrading/repairing of ML sub.
I got an aftermarket sub for my car.
By the way, where you are in NY? I live in Brooklyn and if you want to meet up and discuss the sub issue we can do that.

Used Kicker COMP8 sub. Works great, nice amount of bass. But, I used dynamat on the rear deck and all doors. Dynamat worked amazingly well, sound goes in the cabin so volume is higher, bass is much tighter and the whole system sound much better.

Not really, maybe modify the subwoofer bracket and solder or string together the plug to a new sub or just cut the plug and connect it.
