Default jump start hooded up backwards, maybe ruined my 430

I am not sure if I have done damage or not. I called lexus of des moines and they were completely worthless.

So I went to jumpstart my cadillac with my 05 ls430. i saw the red all over the negative terminal, and hooked up the positive to it not thinking. So I hooked the cables up backwards on the 430. So here is what happen. My 430 ran for a minutes and died and would not restart acting like it had a low battery. I unhooked the cables I noticed the positive cable had welded a little to the positive terminal on the ls430 but i was able to get it off. Also, the cables were red hOT after getting a jumpstart from a charger I had, I got the 430 to restart.

Ok, so what have i damaged, what do i need to have checked. I can't find anything wrong with the car, but now is my battery damaged or something else? What do I check.

The Lexus of Des Moines Service Adviser Advised me "he didn't know" after a 30 minute wait on hold.

If your car starts and runs fine and there are no fault lights you may have dodged a bullet.

Alternatively you may have damaged your battery, alternator, and lots of the computer chips in the car but if you had the car would not be running right and/or you would likely have one or more CEL (fault lights) on.

Yip, since it's running fine - you definitely dodged a bullet...

Next time be more careful...

There is that saying in carpentry...measure twice cut once. Or in surgery they have 2 people mark an x on the right or left body part while prepping the victim. I alway double triple check, before I do jumpstarts.

Buy a jump box for $50. Some even come with air compressors. Best purchase I made all year.

The days for my jumping other cars is over. If anything it's best to say the battery is buried in the trunk or not accessible. Not worth the risk. The funny thing is, I do like to help people.

Agree - if you have an expensive car its likely better to give them $40 bucks, instead of connecting your car's electrical system to a broken down car, and tell them to call for roadside assistance.

Current flows from negative to positive. I think as long as you had that hooked up it should have just flowed reversely? You may have dodged a bullet though as previously stated and the reasoning behind it shutting off was probably to save you, lol. I think if all is well now you're good.

Yeah, haven't owned a Caddy in over a year. Maybe I should change my screen name. Then again, maybe not.
