Post '05 LS430: Timing Belt, Brake Pads/Rotors

Hi,

My '05 LS430 has 82K miles and is up for the 85K mile service; However, a dealer "maintenance guide" does not mention anything about timing belt. Does it need to be replaced? What else should be replaced at this time? On brake pads/rotors, what are ones of the best makes (this is for performance street driving, not track)? BTW, what motor oil grade is recommended (I use Mobil Synthetic)?

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome! Timing belt and water pump are scheduled for 90K. The 5K services are generally just oil change and tire rotation. The oil viscosity is printed on the oil fill cap (5w30). If the car is new-to-you, a thorough inspection by a Lexus dealer would be worthwhile to determine if anything else is needed. You can register your car in the owner section of www.lexus.com and get the full service history. You can also view online versions of the owner's manual if the car didn't come with one.

BTW, "performance street driving" and LS430 aren't generally said in the same sentence. LOL

After you've registered, you can request a hard copy of the owners manual which they will mail to you free of charge. I ordered one just to have a copy in my office.

Thanks very much for your info. I am new to Lexus; Recently "converted" from BMW. Any recommendations on the brake pads and rotors (good OEM makers)?

Thanks again,
Mike

Most folk stick with stock replacement parts as the braking is excellent for road use.

being trusting of my dealer (don't flame me), I replaced my timing belt recently with only 75K on the clock because they found signs of cracking on the belt. They suggested that it be replaced every 90K or 6 years irrespective of mileage because of possible dry-rot. If I had my LS from new, I would have probably not worried about it since it would have been driven frequently, but since I bought it pre-owned, the records indicated that there was close to a year of down time where the vehicle just sat on the lot between being off-leased and reaching my hands. So, because of this, I didn't want to take a chance.

Anyway, take the 90K as a measure of how long it should last safely, but there are individual circumstances that might warrant you change it out sooner. As reference, it cost me $1200 to change out the belt and water pump (not necessary, but done since belt is coming out and they've opened up the front of the engine already).
