Default Fair trade in price?

So im looking to trade my LS430 in, its the custom luxury edition so basically has every single option minus the rear massage etc. Its parchment with ecru interior, heres the kick it only has 78k miles. Its always sitting in my garage. The exterior is flawless. The most Ive gotten for a trade is 12500 and thats after days of fighting.

Do a private sale. Dealers are always going to low-ball you no matter what (more profit for them right?). I would suggest you go on KBB or some other similar site and see how much you can hope to get in a private sale, then post it on Autotrader or cars.com and list it at that price. These cars sell themselves, so the actual act of selling it won't be that hard. Good luck

Have you tried Carmax? Their offers are sometimes higher than other dealers.

Based on the link, it appears to be a first generation LS430, 01 to 03.

i wonder what the $$ difference between an 01-03 and a 04-06 is considering same mileage and package at today's resale value??

i would think if you could get 14k -15k from a private sale that you'd be doing fairly well.

what do you think lexusls430? what is the lowest you would let the car go for? you also gotta keep in mind that although the miles are not high and its been garaged that a potential buyer is seeing an 11 year old car unfortunately.

I could do a private sale but its not worth it if im going to get a 1000 more, since here we pay tax only on the difference between the new car and trade in.

Yep you save $1000 in local sales tax by trading if the local tax is 8%. However local sales tax may be deductible on your fed tax so depending on your marginal tax bracket you could get 15-32% of that as a tax deduction.

Sometimes the tax consequence on a trade-in makes it a sensible move for a high dollar item if a private sale won't bring substantially more. And you avoid having to private sale your car which can be fun or a real PITA depending on who shows up to look at the car.

Just be sure to treat the buy and trade-in as two separate transactions. Tell the dealer you are not trading and negotiate the lowest cash price on the new car. Then after the deal is done offer to trade your old car. That way you know exactly what you paid in the buy transaction, and what price you are getting in the trade in transaction. Mixing the trade and buy transactions is a sucker's move that only serves to confuse the real cost of each transaction and always works to the dealer's advantage. So don't be a noob.

These are difficult to assess value from what i've seen.
I've seen a few 04+ with ~100k sell for 17-18k.

It depends on the area mostly, some places they are just worth much less for whatever reason. With that said, if you were in a rush, i'd take the 12.5k to be honest...
If you can sit on it for a while, they by all means private sell it for a grand or two more overall.
From what i've seen an avg. for 01-03's [via ebay all over the US] is around the 14k mark. Some people are out to lunch thinking they'll get 17k, when an 04-5 on avg. is in the low 20's with less miles.

Wow blast from the past. I haven't seen that car in a while! Your rare color combo always stood out.
Honesty that is a good trade value, plus reduced sales tax toward the other vehicle. In 2010, I was offered $12K for my 2001. I had 80K miles on it. Carfax report showed 1 accident (minor).
I had new 18" sport replica wheels and updated Nav disc. I declined and kept the car for another year. I just did a private sale a month ago for $13K with 86K miles.
Ive been miserable without the Ls430 and now looking for an 04-06 Ls430

I have been offered 18500$ for mine from a dealer (05 ls430 modern luxury with 78k miles at the time in extremely nice condition) I just decided I probably could'nt find anything else Id rather drive for that price. so i didn't do it.
