Default Need Key Advice 2001 LS430

I have an 01 LS430 and need some advice on a key issue. Last year, my key busted open and the insides fell out and were lost. So now I'm left with only one fully functioning key and another key that is cut with no back and inside/buttons.

My question is this- can I buy an already cut used key off of eBay and put the insides of that one in my old key? I understand that I would need to have it reprogrammed, but can you reprogram a used key that was originally meant for another car? I'm getting nervous only having one key that will start the car.

Thanks!

Yes but you need to purchase a key with the correct electronics. FCC ID# HYQ12BBK works on my 2001 LS 430 & should be correct for yours as well.

Odd ritual but not to difficult to self program.

Note. If enough keys have been lost prior to you , programming space can get limited & it will not take the new code but this is a rare scenario.

4D-68 is the transmitter code/device that communicates with the vehicles anti-theft system. A used key numbered as above (HYQ12BBK) should have this code & also the means to unlock doors & open the trunk.

Good luck

I think that the 04-06 LS430s came with 4 keys: 2 master, 1 valet, and 1 "credit card" emergency key.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Is it possible to get a replacement emergency key, and what should it cost?
Thanks.

The emergency key only has to be cut not programmed nor electronic. I bet 30-40 bucks? Not sure

I am in the process of getting a new set of keys for my 92 SC400. It was a much simpler system with only a single button which controlled the doors and alarm system. I have ordered a new set from Sewell and having them cut to the VIN number. In this case, programming consists of a chip (which is included with the keys) that has to be installed in the ECU in the car to recognize the new keys. The ECU is located beneath the rear passenger side panel. Access is by removing the rear seat than then the side panel. The ECU is then removed and the chip located in a small door where it is replaced with the new chip.

I just looked at the Sewell site for a master remote key for an 01 LS430. They have such a key at $168 for Club Lexus members. Cutting will add $20 and shipping another $12. However, just as for the SC400, programming is not included. The key does not include a chip for programming. Consequently, I do not know how the programming is done and I suspect that you may not be able to use the old key after programming for the new key. However, that may not be the case as they sell a single key. I suggest you talk to your Lexus service advisor about how this is done and what the cost would be and whether you can do the programming yourself.

Sewell also has a non-remote key for your car that costs $47 plus cutting and shipping.

Hope this helps.

I have an 02 ls and have misplaced permanently a key twice. I call up midwestkeyless and get a master key from them It is a new shell and blank key with used electronics for less than 80.00. they give you programming instructions also. Stay away from 17.00 ebay keys, I have had no luck with them. I have programmed both keys myself with a bit of difficulty. 1st time took 30 min 2nd time about 10min to get tthe sequence and timing right. I think the trick was instructions say cycle key on then off so many times when really I think it was on then acc so many times not all the way off. You must have 1 master key in hand to program additional keys. car can have 4 keys programmed to it . As you add one the oldest drops off. If you go this route and need help let me know and I have my notes in my glovebox

My key was 148 bucks shipped and cut from Toyota in one day. I was told by Lexus the cutter costs 20 G plus and they did not have one. with no key it was 50 bucks to program no clue how he did it. I was told the keys if I find them would have to be reprogrammed. thanks

I thought I would post the results of my visit to the local Lexus dealer to see about replacing the wallet emergency key(s).
I have SmartAccess, so there are actually two keys: 1. Mechanical flat key and 2. Engine start key.
For both keys, holder, and programming... are you ready for this?... $453.84 .
I guess I can live without them.

I just purchased a used 2002 LS430 and needed to add 2 additional master keys, one with keyless entry and one without. I purchased the 2 keys from Sewell Lexus online with great satisfaction (parts #89070-50660 and 89785-60180). I now have 4 keys, 2 masters with keyless entry, 1 regular master, and 1 valet key. Thanks to all the prior posts which helped guide the programming of my new keys. It took some additional trial and error on both sets of instructions, but I eventually got the pattern figured out for me. Hope my additional notes help you!

Keyless Entry Programming. Lock. Unlock. Trunk. (TTT notes)
1. Sit inside the car. Close the driver’s door. All other doors closed also.
2. Lock the doors with the lock button.
3. Start the car with the original working master key. Wait a few seconds. Turn off the car and remove the original working master key.
4. Open the driver’s door by pulling on the handle. Do not unlock with the button or manually unlock. Just pull the handle and Open the door. Driver’s door is now Open.
5. Within 5 seconds, Insert and Remove the original working master key from the ignition switch TWICE. (In Out In Out).
6. Within several seconds, Close and Open the driver’s door TWICE. (Close Open Close Open).
7. Insert and Remove the original working master key from the ignition switch. (In Out).
8. Close the driver’s door. (Close).
9. Within several seconds, Open and Close the driver’s door TWICE, adding one final Open. (Open Close Open Close Open).
10. Insert original working master key into the ignition switch.
11. Close the driver’s door. (Close).
12. Switch ignition ON then OFF ONE TIME only - this will put the car in ADD mode.
13. Remove the original working master key from the ignition.
14. System should now Lock and Unlock vehicle one time automatically.
15. Within several seconds, on the new key being programmed, press and hold UNLOCK button followed immediately with LOCK button so that you are holding down both buttons at the same time. Hold them for a few seconds. Release the buttons. (The original instructions indicate to depress the buttons simultaneously, which did not seem to work for me after several tries, so I varied how to push the buttons.)
16. Within 3 seconds, press and release UNLOCK button.
17. System should now Lock and Unlock the car once to confirm registration of the new key. (or twice to indicate registration has failed per the original post)
18. Exit programming mode by opening driver’s door.
19. Test Keyless Entry functions on the new key. Lock. Unlock. Trunk.
These steps FINALLY worked for me!!! Good luck!!! TTT

Security Immobilizer Programming. Start Engine. (TTT notes)
1. Have all windows up and doors shut.
2. Stand outside the vehicle.
3. From outside, Lock the doors with the original working master key by pressing LOCK button.
4. From outside, Unlock the driver’s door with the original working master key by pressing UNLOCK once.
5. Enter the vehicle, and close the driver’s door. Press the lock button (by the window switches) once to lock the doors.
6. Start the car for about 5 seconds, then turn the car off, and remove the original working master key.
7. Insert the original working master key back into the ignition.
8. Within 35 seconds, do the following (Make these next moves very precise and without any variation in your motions, which seemed to help):
a) Turn the key to the ACC position, being careful not to turn too far. (key in ACC position)
b) Turn the key from ACC to ON position five times ending in the ACC position. (ON ACC, ON ACC, ON ACC, ON ACC, ON ACC); do this somewhat quickly in about 1 second cycles for each ON ACC motion.
c) Open and Close the driver's door SIX times. (Open Close Open Close Open Close Open Close Open Close Open Close). Do not unlock the door with the button – just pull the handle and the door will unlock during your first Open.
d) Remove the original master key
9. Within 10 seconds insert New Key into the ignition, and turn to "ON".
10. Leave the New Key inserted until the red security light stops flashing (mine took about 60 seconds; other posts say up to 90 – 120 seconds).
11. After the flashing stops, remove New Key from ignition.
12. Depress the brake pedal forcefully ONCE to exit the programming mode.
13. Wait 15 seconds to allow the computer to reset.
14. Test New Key by inserting into ignition. The red security light should go off. Attempt to start the vehicle.
These steps FINALLY worked for me!!! Good luck!!! TTT

If only owners would give all keys they have when they sell their car, we wouldn't have to re-purchase these expensive smart keys.
(My pre-owned 05 LS430 only came with 1 master key; I made another, because it can get very expensive ($600?) if all keys are lost)

What happens most often is that cars that go thru the auctions have extra keys and anything else not nailed down looted form them as they move thru the process. The looting can happen anywhere is the chain when a car goes to auction - then later these items appear on ebay as used items that make the sellers a tidy extra income. That is why its so easy to find all kinds of spare "extras" from late model cars on ebay - mats, manuals, jacks, cargo covers, safety kits, spare tire inflation kits, etc....you name it all available on ebay.
