Default Steering Column Tilt Malfunction

Friends,
Got an '02 LS430, my steering wheel will only shift forward/back..but not up/down. I've seen other member's post their fix, but I'm not getting a 'grinding' noise, as if the gears inside the switch are worn...it is silent when I try to engage the switch. Lexus dealer quoted me about $750 for the fix...I found the part (I think it is correct) on SewellParts.com...[SWITCH ASSEMBLY, TURN SIGNAL (W/ RAIN SENSING WIPERS)]...for $245...
Could you guys/gals please give me your opinion on this and if you think I could replace it myself.
Thanks very much,
JP

Are you sure its the switch and not the motor or the interconnecting wire?

If the tilt motor is broken, it is very easy to replace.

To replace

1. You need to remove the lower cover of the steering column:
I recall you need to remove 3 screws before you attempt to remove the lower cover.
You will need to turn steering wheel 90 degree clockwise & counter clockwise to see
two side-screws. After removing all three screws, you will be able to remove the
cover by judiciously (without making scratches on the plastic) pushing it with a screw driver.

2. After removing the cover, you will se 2 (or 3) bolts holing the tilt motor.
First, remove the bolts. After that, you can easily remove the tilt motor.
I think I moved up the steering wheel and the tilt motor spontaneously
fliped down to my memory. That's it! You will know how to remove
the motor from the steering column. By the way, don't lose the
specifically designed washers.

3. Install a new tilt motor and fasten the two bolts. Don't forget to
install the washers, which you replace with brand new ones.

I hope this will help you.

Just disable the tilt when you turn ignition. Dealer did it for me and it stays in position I have set it in while the car is off/on.

Just for reference, I also own an 2002 Lexus LS430 that had this exact same issue.

The problem was the tilt motor. Most of the repair cost was due to the actual tilt motor part, I believe it just one hour was billed by the local (Finnish) dealer to replace it.

Consider yourself to be in luck, the telescoping motor is way more laborious and expensive to replace than the tilt motor

Do you know how the dealer did it? My steering column only comes in and out... not up and down. That doesn't even bother me much. What bothers me is, when I pull the wheel all the way out and set the memory, the wheel always goes back in and I have to pull it up every time. At this point I don't care if it stays stuck out unless someone knows a fix to make it stick to the memory position.

Thanks.

If you bring the car to the dealer and ask them to disable the auto tilt-tele function at the start-up, I think they will use the handheld tester to turn off the function. I think it will take only a couple of minutes to do the job.

The option to disable steering wheel auto positioning at startup and shut down is settable in the cbest setttings on the LS - has to be set by dealer.
