I had Formula One ceramic installed when I lived in Arizona. If you want heat rejection, you need to use either a ceramic or metallic (titanium) based tint. The latter is claimed to interfere with RF signals, but I had Formula One metallic on two Hondas and it never interferred with the FOBS. OTOH, I didn't have the smart keys on those vehicles, so I didn't want to take a chance. The local lexus dealers also used Formula One, installed by certified installers. And, no, I've never seen or heard of the 1/4" rule. My tint runs to maybe 1/16" of the top of the window. No scraping, no issues. That installer is pulling your leg. Also, if you are serious about heat rejection, avoid dye-based tints. They are merely a dark color and don't last as long. When I lived in LA, I couldn't find a local installer that carried metallic tints. Only one was in OC, and they charged a fortune. You can get it done in Phoenix or Tucson for much less than in LA.

Finally opened the windows today and the tint runs to the top.
No 1/4" gap at the top.
I drove at 0500 this morning and can see the difference in the rear window with cars behind me.
Not so much glare when they get on my back bumper. Another added bonus.
