After several decades of Hondas, I now am driving my first Lexus. It's also the first car I've owned that has an electrochromic rear view mirror. I love the car but have a couple of issues with the mirror. It doesn't dim enough for my liking (i.e., up-close headlights are still too bright) and there's no dimming during the day, which can be a problem if the sun reflects directly into my eyes.

One of my service consultants said that the auto-dim mirror in his 1994 LS 400 is manual on/off only, and that its dimming is more pronounced. So, my questions are: 1) Is there any way to swap out a mirror like that for the current one? 2) Is there any way to swap out an "old-fashioned" lever-control mirror for the current one? 3) Is there any other solution or workaround I haven't thought of?

I'm willing to forego the side mirrors' auto anti-glare if I can get the rear view mirror to do what I want it to do.

Tinted windows help a lot.

Along that line, my service manager suggested deploying the rear sunshade. He also said that retrofitting a first-generation mirror might be possible, but would be expensive unless I could find a used one.
