2005 Ls430 Tilt motor replacement
#46
Replaced my tilt motor yesterday such an easy job. It took under an hour with the help of a friend. So glad to have this feature back since I'm 6'2" and jack thick thighs. I could barely turn the wheel due it being stuck in the down position (where my wife needs it to be).
love this car and looking forward to our road trip from Ohio to Hilton head in a few weeks

- I replaced the tilt motor in ls430 and it worked great till today when I got in the car the wheel was tilted as far up as possible and will not go down. The telescoping part works but the tilt is stuck. It is very difficult to drive and I am afraid it might move while I am driving. Has anyone had this experience? Please advise ASAP

You mentioned that the telescopic is working - that eliminates a bad fuse as being the problem (tilt and telescopic share a common fuse). Did you replace the tilt motor recently? If so, it may simply be a loose electrical connector.

Ordered a TILT MOTOR 89231-50060 from ebay $254 (USD) shipped. Going to attempt it today! Thank you for the great write up.
Will go to dealer to shut off auto-retract to reduce wear and tear on the motors.

My telescoping was weak, I'd prefer it to work, but put the wheel into the proper position, and pulled the fuse....coding it to be off would be better, but haven't given it much thought after fuse pulled...

I guess it's a personal preference but I definitely prefer it to work. It will probably take quite some time for it to go bad again. I say enjoy the feature and worry about another motor down the the road. It's not that bad of a install, I did it on my '04.

Two unexpected issues (not major):
1) Threading the new motor in the bracket took many tries. At first the threads felt like I was cross threading. I tried the old one and it seemed to go in ok. The new motor's threads, on the tip of bolt, looked flattened but the old one had the same looking threads. Eventually I was able to thread the new motor in by rotating starting position.
2) The old motor was threaded all the way down position. So when I put new motor in, naturally i threaded it all the way down. After I tightened it up, and plugged new motor in, it only moved a 1/2 inch up, if that. After freaking out for a sec, I unscrewed the two mounting bolts and backed out the motor (manually turning it) to what I thought is half way point and that did the trick. Now moves as far up as I ever want it to be and all the way down.
Thanks for this and all the threads for the LS430! Couldn't have done it without your help.
PS - you convinced me not to shut off the auto retract feature now that I see it in action. very convenient for my 6'1" big boned frame.

Im facing the same dilemma as you , I want to fix the motor before I spend $300 . In your opinion what you think was wrong after you open it ? Just dry & dirty ?

So i opened mine up today... it worked intermittently when i got the car but it's gotten worse and worse... now it just makes a squeak sound and does not move up or down...
There was a lot of metallic particles as seen in the first 3 pics, i just blew them off by blowing on it with my mouth...
the shaft was pretty much seized and i could barely get it to turn by gripping the end with pliers really hard.
So started taking it apart layer by layer.
this ring #2 acts like a pressure plate, it is conical shaped and i had to put downwards pressure on the discs assembly in order to put the stop ring back on.
This ring #3 is where the problem is, see that material that sticks out like wire? that wore off and it's causing the friction of metal to metal so that's where it binds. need a new motor now as i doubt Toyota/Lexus sells just the clutch parts for this...
