Default 06 LS stereo- factory pioneer v ML

I've seen this vaguely discussed in some older threads. Is there that much of a difference? Is the extra 60 watts or so worth it? I'm not really a fan of the nav and prefer the basic interface which most come with the factory base stereo.

I've tested it out and sounds pretty solid. I've had the NAK in my 98 400 and it has been very good.

It is a damn shame they didn't go all out and put an outstanding system in these cars, but this pioneer sounds good enough I suppose..... Anyway, thoughts on this would be appreciated

I have heard several ML systems and they sounds very nice. However, I would not say night and day difference. If you like the aesthetics of the non-nav dash, go for it.

the pioneer in my premium sounds really good. Don't think the ML in the LS430 is much better - ML head unit may be a tiny bit better but ML speakers are crap. In the LS460 however (2009 +) the ML systems sounds way better than the base system. If you are getting a 460 the ML system makes a big difference in audio quality.

Went with the black 06 430 with 75k miles and base package w pioneer, no nav. I'm thrilled with the car.

I find the "driver" sound setting is terrific, not so much on "all". Struggles a bit on the low end base. My old nakamichi had a nice tight punch to it, a shame they did not stick around long enough.

I'm curious on what a good set of aftermarket speakers would work well in the back doors.....

I am very satisfied with the Pioneer setup in mine. At first I thought it would be a barely adequate system, because the specs (178 watts) aren't exactly mindblowing, and with some cars the "basics" are crap because they want you to splurge with the options...but not with a Lexus LS. Just because it's not decked out with options that doesn't mean the base stuff isn't nice (unlike almost every other car I've experienced). I have heard the ML but there didn't seem to be much bass, like at all. Also, I see thread after thread with complaints of problems (blown speakers, amps, subs, etc.) with the ML, when I don't think I've seen one similar complaint with the standard setup.

I would rate the Pioneer stereo as very good, give it about an 8. It's very crisp and clean, with good bass and great mids and highs. Very little distortion, if any at all, when you crank it. This "base" system is better than many "premium" systems in other cars. It's about a thousand times better than the MUCH overhyped ELS system in my old Acura TL.
