Default Extended warranty let down...

Well, kind of. So, I called my dealer to inquire about the TSB ecu update cost and he had to research it for me. Calls me back Friday and tells me that he did not have any idea what I was talking about but said I was covered under the Platinum warranty until 125K or 2016. I was a bit shocked because I purchased this car 5 months ago without any warranty at 104k. Needless to say this did put a smile on my face as he confirmed my name and address on the warranty. I was thinking "score one for the home team!"

Anyway, I said I was not aware of any warranty and he said he would have to call me back. Apparently it had me listed in their database with this Platinum warranty. Well, short story short, he called me back the next day and said it was the previous owner who had the warranty and I did not. It was not transferable of course...

I knew deep down this was not going to work out but it sure had my hopes up for that day until he called me back... lol. Sucks these warranties are not transferable.

The Lexus Platinum warranty is usually transferable with the transfer fee being $50 or similar paid by the new owner. If you bought this car directly from the previous owner who had the warranty and that owner hasn't cancelled or had the warranty refunded yet, you could possibly have the coverage transferred into your name.

It was purchased from the Lexus dealer. He sold it to them before moving out of the country. From what I was told it is not transferable. Maybe I should call Lexus cooperate just to confirm this.

It is transferable.. Only the CPO is not transferable but they had no interest transfering that to you for $50. If you would had bought it from the owner you could have it transferred as said for $50

I had no idea it even had the Platinum warranty when purchased. I will call cooperate to see what they say. I don't have my hopes up and I knowingly purchased it without a warranty but that's kind of shady of them. Ah well, dealers. They are all the same...

There is often a time frame where it is transferable

Yes from my days of selling warranties and in the finance office most policies are transferable one time from the original purchaser and usually involves a small 50-75.00 fee and a time period of 30 days from date of sale. The lexus policy should follow these but since you did not purchase it privately it may have voided that option but never hurts to ask. Some policies can even be cashed in for the unused remainder when you trade/sell the car.

Talked to Lexus extended care and Lexus cooperate. Figured I would give it a shot.

So, the warranty is only transferable once and it must be a private party sell with a written agreement between the two parties. There is a $50.00 fee as well. If the previous owner trades in the vehicle or sells it to a dealer the owner is eligible for a pro-rated refund. Anyway, there is no way to transfer the rest of the warranty to me even though it looks like the previous owner did not get a pro-rated refund.

I did ask cooperate the consider covering the cost of re-programming the ECU with the shift update TSB but looks like that is not going anywhere either... lol. Does not hurt to try. Still trying to get a price on this update.

off topic question, can we just bring in our cars to the dealer and ask them to have it waranteed for a set price?

Or does it have to be done at the time of purchase?

Dealers are independently owned and operated. Pricing on service and parts varies from dealer to dealer. I'm not exactly sure what your question is. Are you talking about purchasing an extended warranty and if it is a set price? The answer is no. It can vary greatly. In general, extended warranties are not in the consumers favor but sometimes they do pay off.

I would assume it is usually done at the time of purchase. That's how my SC was when the previous owner got the extended warranty on it. It had some insanely long warranty that came with the car when she purchased it used from our local Lexus dealer in the mid 90's.

I think you can get warranties after you buy the car but they're usually really expensive from what I saw with other brands.

You don;t have to buy the warranty at the time you purchase the vehicle. You can buy Extended Lexus Warranty before the factory warranty expires 4 year or 50k miles.

The good extended warranties are only available from a dealer but that can be any dealer. Should be a couple thousand or less depending on what's covered. The less expensive ones only cover the powertrain and not the electronics. If you have a local dealer you like perhaps a small used car dealer ask them they are usually happy to make a few bucks and maybe you'll think of them when cars are on your mind again.
I can get you an ESC brand warranty for a price in that range (I think and off the top of my head) but there are many sources. Google for satisfaction before buying.
Good luck

USAA, my insurance company, offers an extended warranty for 1 year or 12k for nearly 2 grand. Not worth it at all in my opinion.
