But only intermittently. Most of the time it operates normally. Anyone know if this could be something cheap and easy to fix or is it probably a sign the transmission is crashing? Car has 268,000 miles and has been regularly serviced.

Not many transmission failures reported on these cars but with 260k it's hard to say. I'd suggest having shift solenoid and valve body checked first. Any debris in the pan or fluid?

Yes, you are right on. If no code for the solenoid then drop the pan and replace the filter. Sounds like the transmission is right on the edge.

Paging Craigster, did you find a solution to your transmission issue? My 2004 is showing the same symptoms; but with only 105K miles. Would appreciate any feedback or info you have.

Try changing the fluid. Auto transmissions tend to be very sensitive to the quality of the fluid.
