Confused as to EXACt fluid quantity LS430 5 speed transmission
Hi all, my first post here. I am trying to establish the exact fluid required to fill a Lexus 5 speed (A650E) from dead empty.
Background, I have installed a 430 engine with A650E transmission in a Porsche 928, (engine and trans at the front, Porsche transaxle replaced with IRS LSD .
In the coarse of the transplant, the engine and trans were split, torque converter drained.
Due to the shape of the firewall, the top section of the filler tube had to be deleted, bottom tube (from pan had to be bent and capped. No problem here filling, just need a plastic tube and funnel
But...this means no dip stick, so have to fill from factory spec's of quantity
The handbook, which came with my half clip only gives the top up quantities 1.8 litres. I seem to recall when I first filled it finding information that from memory (cannot find a reference - lost a hard drive in a computer crash) was total 5.something litres.
which I adhered to.
since getting up and running, I am experiencing transmission slips and surges. A post here on "DIY transmission flush" mentions 8 quarts
I intend to start again but due to no way to "dip" the level, need to Know EXACT amount from dry.

Thank you, it appears that I am WAY under capacity, whick explains the "slips and surges" engine had only done 60,000K's (40,000 miles) so could not see heavy use damage in the equation
now all I have to do is work out get it back to dry again without pulling the engine'
There was mention of a fill check plug (under a cover on the left hand side of the casing in the "DIY transmission flush "post, not sure if it was for this model anyone know if the 5 speed had this?
Hard to get to on my car, but could be easier way to check level.

So some of the cars with the A650e came with a transmission oil cooler, and some didn't. This makes it a little tricky to find the 'dry fill' fluid quantity.
This uncited source suggests that the A650e behind the 2JZ in the IS300 takes 8.2 liters.
And this oil manufacturer says the that transmission takes 8.9 liters.
And a few other people say 8.4 liters.
I know from personal experience that a pint ( 0.4 liters) doesn't really affect the transmission one way or another. I'd fill the transmission to 8.4 liters and add fluid to compensate for any cooling systems.
Post a video when you get it sorted out!

the half clip the engine transmission came from did have the through radiator type cooler, I have added a small cooler that would not hold much more than the in radiator original. so I do have feed pipes. Does draining via these drain the torque converter?
.So if there is no "check level" plug another question, how much fluid does the torque converter retain?- if I put the car on a nose high angle and drain to clear the pan, Knowing how much the converter holds will be a reasonable starting point- providing of coarse that my low fluid starting point has not reduced the converter volume.
the lower pipe off the pan does not give me any idea of the level, new angle idoes not make it of any use for a shortened dip stick, filler only, but at least if I overfill it will tell me by overflowing.

You could always get about ten quarts of fluid and hook a supply hose and a drain hose to each of the cooler lines, then start the car and have the trans draw the fresh fluid in from a large bucket, and collect the old fluid in another bucket. I guess that would bleed any air out of the system and leave you with the correct amount of fluid in the system.

Never thought of that way,Add fluid until I have no bubbles.Worth a try. If I overfill it will flow out of the stick tube.
(I will not need 2 buckets as all the fluid in there is new, send it around and back in - What I should have done -when I realised that the upper half of the dipstick tube had to go- was measure the length and work out a level on the cut down stick- I am actually using the cut stick as a stopper, fits and seals perfectly inlet tube has same flare on it as what was on the top section. Horrible position to test dip though from the underside of car)

Needed about 2 litres, this seems to have stopped the between shift slips and surges, but still have a "no engagement" on occasions after the car has been freewheeling (but still in gear) like after getting to the bottom of a hill, touch the accelerator, revs, no engage. catches and engages after a few seconds (3-5)

Or, could it be because my after market independent cooler is mounted (high on the front of the radiator) about level with the top of the engine? quite a bit uphill from the transmission?
would this cause an airlock??
