Default Suggestion for a new key fob?

I'm still waiting to get my friends LS in a couple months but I did get to drive it the other day. I didn't realize they had something similar to a push button start where you just leave the key fob in your pocket and turn the key like mechanism. However, he told me he only has the one key fob.

I would think it would be best to have a spare key fob so what is the recommendation on getting one. I'm sure I can go to the dealer but I'm guess that's the most expensive way of doing it. Would I have any other options to get one?

You can buy the key fob new for about $85 at Lexus dealer, then have it programmed and the slide metal key cut to your VIN by them as well. Or, you can buy used very cheaply and re-program it yourself if you have Toyota techstream (also on ebay for ~ $30) and buy a new slide key blade and have it cut at Lexus dealer. The FCC # for the key fob is: HYQ12BZE. Here are several used for sale. Be sure to get the 3-button key fob (a white-color trunk is pictured on the 3d button of the fob); the 2-button fob does not have a trunk release button since it is a valet park key.

Edit: I have purchased used from "mykeyless" and was pleased. Your dealer could program a used key and cut a new blade for it for less than $100.

I'm in the same boat. I bought a used key on Ebay for $16 and ordered a new uncut blank for $10 and had the key cut for $30. I just ordered the Toyota Techstream from Ebay for $25, have not received it yet, it supposed to come Sat. they say. I hope the smart key is easy to program. We'll see. Otherwise off to the dealer to either order a new one or have them program my new/used one.

OUCH!!

I just called my local dealer about a new key fob and they want $199 for the key and $65 to cut/program it. They said it would take about 1.5 hrs to do.

They said they could try to program a used key but there would be a chance that it wouldn't work and I would still have to pay the $65 program fee. Of course they are going to say that to scare you into buying theirs but I'm still not sure which way I'm going to go.

Still looking for any other suggestions. All the ones on eBay to be used with a bit of wear and tear. I'm also not sure how you could re-cut the actual key portion if you bought one used.

caverman...contact the Tulsa, Oklahoma Lexus dealer. I was driving through that area last year and while browsing purchased two keys for a very reasonable price. I believe it was around $72.00 each. They cut new ones and transferred the transmitters while I "shopped". I got the "Eternity" Key. Very durable. I've been pleased with it.

Thanks, I'll try to look up their info and call them.

Were those the 3 button or 2 button fobs and what did they charge you for the programming?

caverman...3 button fob and they didn't charge me anything for programming. Apparently they didn't have to program it because I gave them my old key and they cut two keys with fobs. It worked right away. When I returned home I put the spare main key fob in the Eternity fob and it worked.

caverman...I just called Lexus of Tulsa. I spoke with Josh in parts and he said they still have the Eternity keys and they are 72.99 + tax = 75.00. There is no programming fee if your old transmitter works. They just transfer the transmitter. I didn't ask about the programming fee. Here is their number: 918-665-3987.

Thanks.

So is that a smart key where you can just leave it in your pocket and still turn on the ignition?

No,I have a 2002. It doesn't use the key in pocket start button. I wasn't sure if you were referring to that gen or not. Some of the posts mentioned key cutting and the push button starts don't have a metal key that you cut. AFAIK.

If you are referring to the 04-06 LS430, it is not exactly a pushbutton start, but you don't have to have the key in the ignition lock to turn it manually. You can just keep the key in your pocket or purse.
The key does have a metal blade that is normally retracted inside the plastic housing. You could use it to unlock the doors if the button and door handle detector don't work.

Since most of the threads about smart access keys suggest calling Sewell, and they're now offline....does anybody else have any experience with a different dealer that will cut new master keys from your VIN at reasonable prices??
My local dealer wants an absolute fortune for a key.
Need to get an new master key cut from using my VIN, as I only have the valet key for my car.
