Gen 2/3 to Gen 4 Navigation upgrade. Options you get. Pics inside.
Questions were asked on this forum what options you get with an upgrade to a gen4 navigation system. Here are pictures I took of my navi. I had a gen 2 in my 2001 and got a gen 4 navi out of a 2005 Toyota Prius, part number 86841-50090. Installation is a breeze, all plug and play. You will lose voice command feature though. Also climate, audio and options menus will stay same brownish color.
can you tell me other than looks, what the pros and cons of this upgrade is?
do you loose button functions as gen 4 is used with different display head unit?
are the maps better?
you lose voice command which is gen 4 not voice directions?

I did this myself about 6-8 months ago, I was lucky and get the Player and a 12.1 disc in it for $125 on ebay. (it was pulled from a wrecked car)
The navi works better, Navi logic is maybe a hair better than the older one. The Maps look better, there is a texture on normal grounds and the colors on the map display better. Still not as good as a free phone app but, it is better than what it was.
The quality of the maps (roads etc) will be based on the map disk you get, if you get one for a 2005 car with original maps, you will have the update from 2005 so if you had the same year maps for your Gen2/3, it would be the same on the GEN4. This would be based on the disk you get (and you need a different disc for the GEN4, so if you buy a drive, you need a new disk)
MOST things work as normal with some more options than the GEN 2/3 had (I also have a 2001).
The bugs...
- Voice command does not work at all, If you use basic commands like "I'm hungry" or "I need gas" this stuff does not work at all, If you hit the voice control button, you will just get a error (cant hear or something to the sort)
- The color changes work but, only while the car is on, If you change it to blue for example, for your ride it will stay blue but, when you shut off the car, next time you start it up, it will go back to green.
thanks for the sweet hook up been researching the part number now to find an affordable one. I use my in dash all the time I don't like hand held.
I am looking into xm/serious satellite as an upgrade while im doing the mod. there is an xm oem module I saw a pictorial on. but I found this from a specialty toyo/lexus repair shop. Not sure what it integrates with gen 4 I researched it for gen 2/3. I pod satellite and maybe blue tooth
there is a whole lot of options with the integration and it uses touch screen controls I believe its plug and play

No problem. Do your research before buying them. The screen has some other stuff in it (blu-tooth, etc) on the 2004+ models (GEN4) so make sure you find out how they connect.
Yea, seem them before, they do interact with the touch screen, you access by hitting (I think) one of the buttons like CD 2 times...
If they would fit both cars (2001-2003 and 2004-2006) they would label as such. There might be something different for it if they are claiming it only works with GEN4...
As this will upgrade the NAVI system, it wont upgrade the whole system to a GEN4 system.

Know what I mean ?
Hallo, am I right you attest gen 4 has bluetooth capability?
I have a is200 with gen2 navigation ecu and I want upgrade to gen4. An issue could be it doesn't work via remote controller, the good side is I could have the touch screen.
If you upgrade a Gen 2/3 Navigation system (on 2001 - 03 LS) to Gen 4, it only upgrades the Nav system. It does not also provide bluetooth (even though the upgraded Gen 4 Navigation screen shows an icon button for bluetooth). 2004 and newer LS430's had factory Gen 4 Navigation system and bluetooth capability.

May be the button light up as soon as you connect the bluetooth system in a car that has. ;-)
