Default Review: Yokohama YK580's

Folks,

A few weeks ago I put new tires on the old gal. When I bought the car it had some no-name off brand tires. They were crap - all around.

Discount tire was running a special, and I got $200 off the set of 4. For a shade over $500 out the door... I couldn't pass it up.

I've been a huge Yokohama car-tire fan for years. They seem to build a great tire at a fair price.

The YK580 is a Discount Tire exclusive, made just for them.

It does not disappoint. Smooth, quiet, and with great characteristics. Throw it into a corner, and there is no drama, it simply grips and goes. Braking is far improved. The ride is a bit softer, and a lot more quiet. They have astounding wet and dry traction, to be a "run of the mill" all season tire, with a 60k miles treadlife warranty. I've put about 3000 miles on them so far, and have enjoyed the heck out of them.

If anyone is looking for a great tire, at a very good price, I would recommend this one.

This is the second set of these I've bought - the first was last year, on the Volvo - FWD - and a completely different car. They qualities shine a lot more on the Lexus than the Volvo...

Nonetheless - I'd highly recommend these.

I can vouch for these as well. Great tires. much better cornering than the Michelin Primacy's, and lower profile - cooler looking.

Thanks for the great review Ncsu.

It's always great to hear about great other tires, that can try to give the MXV4's a run for it's money, although it is being discontinued now

Always good to know about a smooth and comfortable tire.

Nice. Thanks for the review. It does have a 580 tread rating so this means you will get about 30 - 40 miles out of them. You need close to 700 to get 60k miles on a heavy LS. Keep us updated with how they wear and perform. I have always liked Yokohama performance tires I have had in the past. But soft rubber wears quickly. Kind of a trade off.

Agree - In general soft compound tires ride softer and stick great but tend to wear faster, harder compound tires wear longer but don't ride or handle as well. I prefer to have a tire handle and ride better and I'm willing to give up some tire life in return. Hard tires get even harder and stick worse in cold temperatures. Modern tires are getting lots better at wearing long and also sticking pretty good, but its still a little bit of a compromise situation.

I've had mine for 45k miles and they're still going strong. I believe they carry a 50k mile warranty, so you should get some credit if they quit before then.

How long ago did you buy the Yokohama tires from Discount Tire? If in April, here's $60 for you - REBATE

Thanks for the recommendation. now that the YK580 is no longer available, wondering what's the model name of its successor? thanks again.
