Default 2001 LS430 upgrade gen 2/3 Nav to gen 4 ?

I recently purchased '01 LS430. Haven't used Nav much but many of tried addresses don't show up (2000 ver 1). Read on forums about upgrading from gen 2/3 to 4. Wondering if I should upgrade to gen 4 with newest map disk (appx $350) or just get latest map disk for the gen 3 (appx $75). I understand will lose voice commands with gen 4 upgrade. Is this just voice input, does Nav still announce turns etc ? Does affect radio etc ? Any input, suggestions, etc appreciated .

Your 2001 Nav is actually a Gen 2. The voice commands that you'd lose are to prompt the Nav only (e.g. "Home") - - voice input to the Nav. The Nav digital voice with Gen 4 installed in your '01 will still provide turn-by-turn voice guidance. It does not, in my experience, affect the radio in any way. Some have lost the clock "auto update" feature with Gen 4 in '01 - '03 LS. There are a few threads on this upgrade, including one of mine. It's largely a personal choice - some folks don't use the inboard Nav, others (like me) find it useful. I use POI and related as well. The Gen 4 has much larger CPU capacity too.

Thanks for the info. I know most just would use there phone, but I would rather use the in car Nav. Probably wouldn't notice loss of voice commands, which many seem to think doesn't work well anyway . Would you lose overide feature? Probably doesn't matter that much. Would I gain much with the gen upgrade or newest disk for gen 2 sufficient ?

You lose the override regardless even on the Gen 2/3 if you update the Nav to current 14.1 version. Keep in mind the Gen 2/3 player may fail at some point too. Upgrade to Gen 4 with a Nav player from a 2006 Prius or similar - they use same Nav player. Here you go:

For my '02 I just bought a used DVD player from an '06 Highlander on eBay, $98 with free shipping. Don't know yet if it includes a DVD or not. It is part number 86841-50090. 90-day warranty, sounds like a great deal. Hope it works, my player has been busted for the last five or six years!

How did you find one so inexpensive ? I have been looking on eBay but they are all $250 and up. I was looking under part number, as well as Lexus and Prius. That seems like a great buy.

I first searched by the part number and didn't find any under $300. Then I searched "prius navigation" and found it. Weird thing is it had "Highlander" in the auction title and not "Prius", but I guess it had listed Prius as one of the compatible vehicles or something which allowed it to come up. The part number was not in the title.

Default Installed upgrade

I just installed generation 4 navigation upgrade. I found a gen 4 nav control unit from 06 RX400h on eBay for $280. I also ordered 2015 U29 gen 4 nav DVD 14.1 from NAVIDVD.com for $45 + $7 s/h (recommend...great prices on all year nav DVDs). It was 15 minute job....plug and play. 2 screws to lift out...4 screws to swap bracket...plug in and done. Still not the latest GPS technology but Nav system a nice little upgrade and disk a definite improvement.

I've been wanting to upgrade for months but eBay prices were over $400 when I searched gen4 navigation. I'll have to search again tonight with the other key words. Hopefully I find a deal!

86841-50090 or 86841-0E010. See my posts in threads with links in post # 4 above.

Question

I just purchased a different part # nav module because It was out of a Prius and listed as 2004-2009 compatible. I got the unit for $30, so I thought I'd jump on it

It shows part number 86841-47040

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-2005-20...72.m2749.l2649

Then I bought these disks
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Newest-2016-...72.m2749.l2649

Does it look like I'm going to be ok?

Sorry to bump this really old thread, but I've searched everywhere and cant find that anyone has used this part number.

@Tom that is quite an extensive list of LS's you have there my friend. With upgrading the navi unit or disk, are the gains better than having the ability to override? I don't like having to pull over to input a new destination. I updated my disk to the latest version 15.1 but put the old one back. For now I use my phone as turn by turn volume is still low even when turned up all the way.

Also where did you get your LED mirror covers, if you don't mind sharing. I have been searching for something like that to no avail.
