Anyone else get the gear whine between 70-80MPH when you take foot off gas?

I'm sure mine was not a wheel bearing. Also, this seems to be consistent with 04 models complaining about this specific noise and the common denominator is the transmission recall. Mine went away with servicing the transmission fluid. I also serviced the differential at my first transmission drain and refill but I really don't thing the gear whine was from the rear end.

Here is the test to see if the noise is transmission related.

Drive in sport shift mode (S+-)
Once you reach highway speeds and start hearing the whining, shift down to 5th gear. Observe if the whining goes away even if you are pressing on gas. If it does then it is transmission related and if not then something else.
I just ran the test and I hear noise only in the 6th gear while pressing on the gas pedal.
drain/refills are in order next.

I do remember reading a thread on the other Lexus forum a while back where another 430 owner noticed it.

Changing diff and tranny fluid soon, will see if it makes any difference.

And, Yep, we are moving back to Tennessee. It's just TOO F**CKING EXPENSIVE HERE.

We could, literally, own a 4k sq foot, 4bed, 4bath luxurious McMansion in Knoxville for about the same money we are flushing down the toilet renting a 700 sq foot apartment with 2 windows here.

It's stupid to live here unless you are like 8 figure wealthy.

What a ride I'll never forget, though!
I hear ya on how expensive it is in CA. Sure you could move to TN but, then, you'd have to live in ... TENNESSEE!? F that.

That noise is your gears. You can live with it for a very, very long time and there won't be a problem other than the noise.

I realize this is a very old post but hope someone can chip in. I have a perfect 04 LS430. Mint condition, 120k miles. The 70-80 whine is really irritating. Transmission has been slowly drained and refilled (the last time by the dealer).
It shifts very smoothly. At just under 70, the car is completely quiet so it's not tires. Suggests appreciated.

Change your differential fluid.

I just live with it, though I’m not sure it even does it anymore. I have also had a fluid exchange done by the dealer. Shifts like the car is brand new. It is annoying but don’t worry about it.

I can’t believe this was 6 years ago. To the dude who made fun of TN, I’m laughing all the way to the bank because everyone wants to live here now. Among lowest taxes and least government you'll find in this great country, and my house has appreciated by 50% in 4 years. If we stayed I’m guesstimating but I’d say we would have wasted $200k renting by
now. Two hundred grand in some landlord’s pocket, now screw THAT!

You are not the only one getting out of Ca. I live in Az. and the amount of people moving here from California is staggering. I had to do some traveling in New Mexico and Texas and it's the same there. Caravans of U-Hauls and moving trucks coming out of California would blow your mind. They are starting to wise up I guess.

Yep. We've been gone since 2015. I can't say too much per the rules. But I can say that thankfully the CA transplant neighbors (I have two) in my little nook HAVE NOT brought any of it with them. They absolutely love it here.

And oh to keep this OT, one of the big reasons I'll still have my LS430 until the year 2968 is because we made that whole journey with it, little whine and all. Verrrry sentimental vehicle.

Changed the fluid 3x (last at the dealer). Driving normally, have to look at the tach to see when it shifts. In sport mode, full acceleration, shifts perfectly. Glad the move's worked out for folks. I would like to check out other states, but my wife still a fan of CA. Why leave? Local gas station has regular for 3.99/gallon.

Oh yeah, the whine. Always drink a good red. LOL. It is irritating but used to it. Driving under 70 is a little dangerous in CA but you get better MPG. Over 81, the car just cruises and there's no noise. Sat in the passenger seat while my wife drove. Couldn't hear it. I like the car enough that I've halfway debated getting another (non '04) transmission. Not worth it. It would also ruin my "never needs repair" story.
