Default climate control question

On the 2005 model LS430 , this might sound crazy but to turn on the heat do I just leave it on auto mode and turn up the temperature then push the climate button and make sure the a/c is turned off? I'm also getting a cold slight draft coming out of the front defroster, any suggestions?

Just leave the temperature set on what you want the interior temperature to be and let the car do the rest. As it warms up, it will gradually increase the fan speed until the engine reaches operating temperature. I like to leave the air conditioning on for the dehumidifying function to prevent the windows from fogging up, if it gets too cold outside the car will automatically disable it.

is it ok to leave the a/c compressor running all the time or will it shut off when necessary?

The compressor cycles automatically to keep the evaporator within a certain temperature range. Below freezing, the car won't engage it even if the ac is on. I leave the ac on all the time, it's not going to hurt anything.
