Need help, telescopic steering failing

I have a 2005 and the telescopic steering is not doing much but quick squeaks. If I pull while I pull the switch it will come out, and, oddly will retract itself when the key is turned off.
Does this year have the same motor as an 04?
Does this unit have a plastic gear?
Is this common?
