I was putting on my winter tires today and found the shop put all four tires on the wrong way round. These winter tires are clearly directional as they are stamped with "inside" and "outside", yet all the "insides" were put on the "outside".
I bought new rims and had them installed last winter so I've been driving around like this for a least a few months.
I don't know how a tire shop can ****** up such a simple job. Idiots! Need to have a talk with them.

Turns out, there are 3 types of tires (Look at Page 5 of the attached):
1) Directional
2) Asymmetric
3) Directional and Asymmetric
Each has specific mounting procedure and requirements for the periodic tire rotation.

Rotated to the other side the inside would still be outside.

Exactly. According to the definitions in the document rkw77080 sent, the tires would be classified as "asymmetric". If I put them on the other side, the wall would still say inside. You need to physically reverse the tire on the rim. I'm sure this is more common than people think. I took them back to the shop and had them flip the tires. Didn't notice much of a difference, but I don't want to take any chances in the snow.
