The FOB deactivates the steering lock and allows you to turn the ignition switch to start the car. It will not take any additional theft deterrent action after that. If you remove the FOB from the car, you will get a "Key Is Not Detected" indication on the dashboard, but the car will continue to operate normally.
I know once the engine is running, you will not be able to operate the wireless door lock, but you can lock the driver's door manually with the metal (blade) key in the FOB. Of course, make sure all the other doors are lock before you exit.

So if the car is running and Iam no there with the key fob and the doors aren't locked somebody can jump in and take off without the key fob?

I have a 2004 LS430. I just now tested the scenario by starting my car and then took the FOB out and left it in my garage. I was able to drive my car around the block with the "Key Is Not Detected" warning. But please test it for yourself, it might vary from year to year, like lulugirl89 said...
This design makes sense from a safety standpoint. You know how when you try to start your car and your FOB battery is dead, you get the same "Key Is Not Detected" warning. To your car, the dead FOB battery is treated the same as if the FOB is not there.
So image if your are driving on the freeway and your FOB battery finally gives out, you wouldn't want your car to think that you're stealing it and take some "theft deterrent actions" like shutting down the engine or something like that, would you?
Yes it can be stolen while running and be driven as far as they want. When they turn it of then it can not be restarted. It can be driven to a chop shop, So don't leave it running.
Correct. Like other fellow members mentioned here, the car will still be drivable even if the key is not detected.
Bad on Lexus's part, it should suspend the engine if it were to be driven for a specific distance, say like 1 mile.
I think that would've been easily implemented, but I don't think they ever saw the need for it, no idea to be honest.
If you live in cold areas and need to warm up the car often while being away, I would recommend you get an aftermarket remote start system, like the Viper. I hear pretty nice reviews about it.
Those systems have a security option where the car won't drive without the remote being present. And you can start the car through your iPhone, while still laying in bed
