Default Broken wheel lock key workaround....

Kind of got the idea here on this forum but rather than pound on a socket with a sledge, I made flats on the round lock. I used my cone shaped burr and a high speed die grinder and marked the center of each hex flat with a divit on the circumference of the lock lug nut. I then expanded each divit into a flat until my 19mm impact socket started to go on. Then I beat it with a sledge and got them off with a breaker bar. Whew.... Dodged a bullet!

PS I will not be using locking lug nuts going forward so if anyone wants to steal my wheels, have at it. Not a great system, especially after 15 years of use. C.

Same here. I don't use wheel locks. Especially on my parents and family member cars because they tend to get misplaced or stripped causing a headache. Some tire shops will gun the crap out if the locks and will cause it to strip. Find it less likely for someone to steal stock wheels.

Everyone with wheel locks has to keep the key in the car's cubbies/glove box or trunk. A determined wheel thief can find most wheel lock keys in 3-4 minutes after breaking into your car and trunk...so additional possible damage. Wheel locks not worth the hassle. Many thieves will steal the entire car and part it out later in a safe place.

I agree with all written above! I stripped the wheel lock of my wife's car last spring when changing out the winter tires/wheels. Thank god I have a friend that's a Lexus tech, he saved my weekend and headache. I bought a total of 8 regular lugs to swap out for the wheel locks so I'll never have this hassle again! If someone wants to steal your car, they'll find a way and that's what insurance is for.
