Default Took 10 Minutes to Fill at Gas Station

I've been filling my '05 just fine for years, no problems. Yesterday the tank was virtually empty as I stopped to fill it up. As I started pumping it clicked off immediately. I pulled the nozzle out a little and tried again. It stopped immediately. I then tried holding handle in a position that would only fill at about 1/2 rate. It clicked off again like it was full. I ended up barely running any gasoline in the tank in order to fill it up. It took me 10 minutes to fill my tank! Boy, you should have seen the looks I was getting by those around me...It probably clicked off 50 times before I could get 20 gallons in!

I have searched and seen it seems a lot of you have had problems where you could only partially fill and then the pump would start clicking off and you have shown a TSB on what to do. My problem seems to be different in that I couldn't even begin to fill an empty tank without the nozzle clicking off. Also, I only drive this care about once a month. I was wondering if spiders or mud daubers could have crawled in and made a home in the lines somewhere technically shutting them off and not letting the air escape. Also, I had a mechanic replace both rear shocks and am wondering if he could have bent something.

Thanks for your help!

To add further info, I filled up the tank yesterday and drove about 200 miles. Got home and parked car in garage. This morning I decided I would take the cap off the tank and shine a flashlight down the filler neck tube. As I loosened the cap it went "whoosh" like the gasoline had been held up in the filler tube until I released the pressure and it surged down into the tank. It was loud and it sounded like it was moved with a force behind (or in front of) it. Does this help in your diagnosis?

I believe some of the 2004's had a recall on the fuel system. Not sure if that's causing your issue, but may be worth looking into. Also, I could be wrong about that. I was just doing research a few minutes ago as I am purchasing a 2004 later today and I came across that recall mentioned somewhere.

Actually, my VIN falls under this TSIB but it will be my expense. Repair by Lexus was only good for 48 months or 50K. I was just wondering if my description of what is wrong is describing what the TSIB will fix.

I would just buy the part and repair myself.

I'd try the next refill at a different gas station. The description you described also fits a pump that needs to have the filter replaced. I've had that happen to me. I did also experience the refill problem because of the design problem. Inserting the fuel nozzle pipe in upside down helped. I quickly got the TSB done and that solved my problem. That was years ago when my car was only a few years old and under warranty. No problem sense.

+1 for try a different pump and report back. I would blame that pump first before blaming the car.

My car can be picky about the pump, too. I always try and use the same pump when I am at home. On road trips it is always a gamble. I find that I have better luck at major gas stations. The cheaper ones, like Arco and below are always a crap shoot.

This has happened to be before as well. I think it may have something to do with the position of the nozzle into the gas tank and how much air is being allowed into the tank or something like that. Fill up again somewhere else and let us know.

Default delay in filling the fuel tank

This is mostly due to the evaporative system malfunction .check all the valves in the evaporative system working well.
