This forum probably needs a place for really stupid questions; perhaps it already has one. If so, this question will surely qualify.

Can you start an '05 Lexus with just the hard key? By that, I mean the metal part that slides out of the key fob. I'm trying to understand what the value is of a "wallet key" if all it does is unlock the car. From my understanding, my car won't even lock if it detects that the smart key is inside the vehicle, making it impossible to "lock your keys in your car."

The slide metal key alone only fits into the driver's side door lock. It doesn't fit into the ignition, and won't start your car. A "wallet key" is different. It is flat plastic like a thick credit card that has two keys: one for the door and one for the ignition. The ignition key has a chip and fits in the column and will start the car.

One "stupid" question deserves another, lol. Did you know, that the key fob fits in the column ignition switch? (I know, sounds stupid, right?)

Even though it's a 'smartkey' and it doesn't have to be inserted into the column and merely kept in your pocket, purse, etc, the fob fits into the column.

I have several keys on my keychain and the large smartkey/fob jabs my leg when I'm driving with it in my front pants pocket. I have a tendency also to misplace my keys, so to keep it simple, I always insert the 'smartkey' into the column, and start the car like that. (My gf never knew the car could be started with the fob inserted into the column, lol! She thought it HAD to be in her purse!)
