Why....well, when it's raining, it's not dark enough for the headlights to turn on when in auto. But common sense and the law say to turn on your headlights as the wipers are being used.
I notice that the headlights will go off if clicking the fob 2X to lock, so that's why I think it's ok. But once when I simply closed a pass door and the lights were in the ON position, the car beeped twice at me....
Pretty sure it's ok. It's useful if say you're running errands and it's raining hard etc, no need to fiddle with the headlights going from ON to auto or ON to OFF....

I've kept my headlights in the on position for the past year or so and I've never had an issue with it.
I think the headlights only stay on for 2 minutes after you turn the car off and remove the key, and I think this is actually a setting you can change in techstream - you can make it as little as 30 seconds and as long as 4 minutes IIRC.

Auto = Lights on after dusk, will shut off after predetermined time elapses (adjustable via Techstream software)
On = Lights on when key is on, will shut off after predetermined time, same as above.
