Thumbs down Nine Quarts of Oil

Just came from Lexus dealer south of Boston, had new wipers and an oil change done. When paying my bill $169.39, I noticed a charge for nine (9) quarts of oil. Apparently someone goofed on the quantity, as far as I recall the capacity is closer to 5.5 Quarts.
Now I'm waiting for a return call from the service adviser to inform him of the potential error made by someone at the dealer.
Drivers side wiper blade: $50.34
Passenger side wiper blade: $35.33
Oil Filter $11.34
Engine oil: $3.78/ quart
Gasket: $2.86
Environmental Compliance Charge: $11.33
Labor: $37.00
Hand Car Wash: N/C

holy cow, it's $85+ for new wipers? Agree that 9 qts seems high, but maybe they'll say it's inexact. Because when I went to the dealer for a brake flush and coolant drain/fill, none of the prices matched what they said they would be (actually much lower, yet when looking at the invoice, unexplainable).....what I mean is say you do 9 times $4, plus $37, plus $11. that's $84. $84 is conceivable for an oil change. Say they goofed and it should have been 6 quarts, take $12 off and now it's $72. That is also conceivable. Nobody really knows what they did except the person who wrote it up....good luck.

Unless you really like the OEM wiper blades, you can go to your local Advance Auto (and bet other competitors do this too) and pick up a set of top-rated blades for 1/3 the cost and they will put them on your car for free.

I suspect your environmental compliance charge is based either on the total $$ of the bill or the engine oil amount, so if they reduce your bill for the oil you might see a reduction in that $$ as well.

I've learned not to change the OEM wiper blades. They are very durable an do not need changing. DO change the rubber inserts though. You can get the exact same inserts from any Toyota store and they are about $18.00 for both. Nice product and easily replaceable.

I would have gone for inserts myself, but my frames are already gone and I have the frameless kind...so I went Valeo (they are OEM for so many makes including BMW)....

Default $85.67 Wiperblades (Ouch)

Apparently my 430 had aftermarket wiper blades installed and I was not clear on how to replace them so the tech went with all OEM replacement parts.
Now that the car has factory wiper blades the wiper inserts can be installed for about $10 per arm or even less.
Nothing beats the factory arms for quality and strength, big difference in appearance.
Quality isn't cheap

My 430 had aftermarket wiper blades when I bought it in April. I recently replaced them with Toyota blades from Bell Lexus in Scottsdale. I paid $42 plus tax for the pair. Now I can buy just the insert next time around...
$85 for the pair is insane.

People that throw away the OEM wiper assemblies do themselves and the car a disservice.

There's no "potential error." That IS an error! The capacity when doing an oil change + filter is 4.8 quarts (04-06 years at least). You're being MUCH too kind.

What's the $2.86 charge for a GASKET? Was it a blown "head gasket" after they showed you the bill???! Perhaps it's the crush "o-ring" for oil drain bolt??

I am pretty certain the engine oil capacity for LS430 with filter change is 5.5 quarts. Most dealers would charge you for 6 quarts. 9 quarts is the oil capacity for LS460 with filter change. $3.78 per quart is very inexpensive for dealer oil charge - must have been straight dino and not synthetic oil....still a pretty low cost for oil quarts from a dealer. Lots of high end dealers charge $6 per quart for dino and 12 for full syn.

I'm about absolutely certain the book specs 4.8 US quarts.

Not saying you or the manual are incorrect, but I have changed my own oil and filter approx 20 times in 8 years and have added 5.5 US quarts of oil every time to fill it back up. I'm too lazy to go dig the manual out tonight but I'll look over the weekend and right or wrong, I'll take a picture of capacity page and post it. Or if some one beats me to it post a pic please.

Here's the oil capacity spec on page 368 from a 2006 LS430 owners manual. Looks like 4.8 quarts US engine capacity and 5.4 quarts US with filter change.

Other model year LS 430 manuals may have a different spec listed so check your own manual.

Last couple of years I have been using a slightly oversize filter on mine so I typically add a little more than spec'd - about 5.7 quarts US.
