Kind of funny... When I first brought the 1995 LS400 home my wife hated it. She said it looked like a wealthy old man's car but after a few years she grew to really like it.
When I brought the 2002 LS430 home my wife hated it. She said the LS430 did not have the distinctive lines and classic look of the LS400.
Now that a few weeks have passed she has grown to really like the "new" LS430. She likes the bit-more-modern lines.
I loved my LS400 but this LS430 is a superior vehicle. That extra three inches at the wheelbase works.

Stupid question, but as far as the exterior, I do not see MUCH difference between an 02 and my 04. Slight, little things here and there; however overall it does not look much different in my eyes. Then again, this is my first Lexus, but I have been a fan for quite a while.
I can see no other differences between the 2001 and 2004.

On 2001 - 2003 vs 2004 - 2006, there are a number of changes not mentioned so far. Did a bit of searching in past threads for the below
The Lexus LS 430 benefits from substantial engineering upgrades for 2004 + that significantly improve what was already a superb luxury car. It's quicker and more sophisticated than last year's model.
Model year 2004 + brings major changes to the LS 430: revised styling, suspension refinements, safety improvements, and mind-boggling technology. A new six-speed automatic replaces last year's five-speed for improved acceleration performance without sacrificing fuel economy. There are more airbags than ever before (eight) and a system that tightens the seat belts before a crash. There's a tire-pressure monitor, a backup camera, headlights that swivel for seeing around corners, and Dynamic Laser Cruise Control that maintains a set following distance to the car ahead. With Bluetooth and SmartAccess, you can unlock the doors, start the car, drive off, and make hands-free phone calls without even pulling your key or your cell phone out of your pocket or purse.
The front fenders, hood, headlamps, fog lamps, grille, front and rear bumpers, trunk lid, and rear combination lamps are all new and the front combination lamps (signal/parking) have been redesigned. The standard 17-inch wheels have been redesigned and new 18-inch wheels are available with the Sport Package, freshening the profile. These changes clearly upgrade the appearance for 2004 +, giving it a more substantial look and more presence, but few are likely to say, "Ohmigosh! It's the new LS 430!" Perhaps most noticeable to other motorists are the newly exposed dual exhaust tailpipes, which protrude from the lower edge of the bumper and project a look of power and performance to those in your rearview mirror. New LED brake lights are brighter, light up quicker, last longer, and draw less current, plus they look neat.

Does the 2001 with 16" rims ride better than the 2004 with 17" rims?
#26
A thicker sidewall will always ride a little better, however you have to incorporate the rotational momentum into the wheel size as well. The ride quality between a 16 and a 17 will be very slight, it will depend more on the quality of the tire. You can never go wrong with a Michelin or Continental.

I've had several LS's and by far, I would have to say that the 2004-2006 is the best. I currently have a 95' and an 05' UL LS. I love both of them for certain reasons, but If I had to choose one, hands down the 05' wins! It's a MUCH more refined vehicle.

fog light shape
rear tails are LED which has a clear strip as opposed to the orange strip.
Lower rear bumper has exhaust cut out and exposed tips and not hidden
it’s a big and obvious difference in my eyes.
01-03 is not attractive to me. But that’s just my opinion.
04-06 is sexy as hell and cleanest of all!!!
we might be biased but a lot of ppl here like 04-06 over the LS460.

I agree the late-model LS430s are a bit prettier with one exception... I do not care for the dual exhaust sticking out the back like the first-gen LS400 had.
I am a Gear-Head and there is a reason muscle cars have big fat pipes coming out the back. They need them for flow and for sound.
I prefer the hidden exhaust system on the late-model LS400 and early-model LS430. Much cleaner/refined look.
Today even Lo-Po cars have dual exhaust coming out the back. Kind of cheesy...
