well, update. i am giving up. i have no clue what it could be. i replaced the actuator with a newer one (2 actually) and it still does not work. with the newer latches, the trunk does not latch. at least with the old one, i can still close the trunk. i'll just deal with having to open the trunk with the key and then i can use the button to "soft close" it.
