Engine Overheated

Rad cap failed allowing coolant loss causing overheat. Clearly neighboring cyl 6 and 8 are not producing, perhaps head gasket failure between those 2 cyl and/or valve train component failure as vvt code would support. Teardown of cyl head (s) after compression test will be expensive with potential to still have engine bottom end problems. Close or similiar time and money to swap in a used motor perhaps less.
I would totally tear down the clanker for a post mordem if they dont want the core...i dont think these motors are sought by builders...failures are rare and good used motors are plenty and fairly cheap considering. A good used jeep 4.7 V8 is like 2 grand and its a time bomb by design. The 3uz will go along time unless something like this happens. A 5 dollar radiator cap killed your engine...it doesnt take long and by the time most drivers realize whats happening the damage is done.
Or pull the heads and decide decide from there. Expensive decisions are best done with the car off the $125 hour shop hoist.
did i miss how many qts of black oil came out of the engine?

The mechanic said it would be too expansive to pull the engine apart and compression tests won't tell you the whole damage.
Could it be just the spark plugs have gone bad after overheating?

You have gotten many and good advise/suggestions. I know it's a horrible situation and a difficult decision. You seem to be in the denial phase of berievement, which is understandable when one of our 'babies' appears to be facing the end of it's life. You have, I believe, enough information on the status of your car. I believe that, to put it in a humane way, you either call a code blue and try reviving her or just put her in hospice and make her as comfortable as possible; remember that living, sometimes, is more difficult than dying. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and do whatever that may be.

The shop that I normally use gave me estimate of $3210 ($1838 for engine with 80K + $1162 for labor + $210 tax).
The cheapest quote i got was $750 for labor only from someone on Craigslist. sounded too risky.
If I buy my own Engine and it has problems I would have to pay the labor again to replace it. I have looked at a company called JDM they claim to have engines from Japan with 40K-60K around $1000 -$1300.

@LexInFL really feeling bad for you man, please do not get discouraged or demotivated, do everything possible to find out exact cause of the engine tapping and failure of cooling system. The video doesn't look very promising at all, as well as numerous additional error codes that engine is now generating. Looks to me that air-fuel mixture is out of control as well as some damage in engine mechanical parts may be present. 3uz-fe is very reliable but everything has its limits when consistent overheating or knocking is literally ruining the block.

Maybe you can talk to your local high school auto tech shop teacher or auto tech trade school instructor. We used to swap engine for teachers and students, friends etc for very cheap. I think just cost of fluids/materials.

The exact same thing happened to me. The radiator cap failed which super-pressurised the overflow tank and blew the lid off, which smashed the neck off. I got away with it all however, motor still holds oil and coolant and compression, no odd noises or anything like that, which is pretty lucky considering I was doing huge burnouts in it. For safety's sake I'd just be putting a replacement engine in yours. I went down that road in my old Contour V6 (popped a head and exhaust gasket) and it turned into a money pit, and in the eventual end, it toasted the rotating assembly after it oil surged on me.

Jdmenginesdirect on eBay was selling used engines for $900 with free shipping. I haven't bought one yet as I'm waiting for them to get a six speed transmission in stock so I can buy that and an engine for $1400 with free shipping. My '01 needs the engine and I'm pretty sure my '05 needs the transmission.
Just an FYI, the service manual says you must pull the engine and trans out as a unit so if you are getting shop quotes keep that in mind.

BTW I had a compression test done on my Engine

The tech also recommended getting a used engine instead of trying to fix this. So I am the process of doing that. I will keep you posted.
