Default shock air pump

Both rear air shocks on my 2001 LS 430 have been replaced in the last 60 days. The air pump continues to come on quite often. My mechanic has found no leak in the lines going from the pump to the shocks, but it still pumps every time I start the car as well as when I am driving. He said that he adjusted the connection to the 'potentiometer" but it still keeps on pumping.

Sorry to tell you this but it sounds like the compressor is going or the front shocks are leaking. That said, the compressor in my '02 UL ran alot of the time and it didn't seem to hurt anything.

It could also be the bushings for the air compressor that have failed. You shouldn’t be able to hear or feel when the pump comes on. The fix isn’t too expensive.

A rebuild kit for the compressor was available from Lexus. You might want to get the kit and take it to a local rebuild shop.

The air suspension system is dynamic, the car lowers at highway speed so yes you will hear the compressor run when you slow down. You will also hear the compressor run when you fill the gas tank from empty or add a significant weight load such as passengers, the system always tries to maintain the same right height. You will also notice that on a cold morning the compressor will run because with the drop in temperature you lose pressure so the compressor has to make up for that loss in pressure.

That being said this is a sealed system, once the compressor builds pressure and turns off it shouldn't have to turn on again unless you are traveling at highway speed, add weight to the car, have a drop in temperature, or set the height to "high" with the button.

Hopefully your mechanic didn't adjust the rear height level sensors, the adjustment shouldn't be touched unless your rear ride height isn't correct.

When we first got our 04 I never heard the pump run. Then it became noticeable. I thought there was a leak but now think the change is due to the rubber isolation bushings failing. Since it's not hurting anything it may not be a bad thing as it allows you to monitor pump activity. Normally it runs for a bit when you come off a highway. The car lowers at high speed (silently as it simply vents some air) and rises as you slow down. It will also run if you add weight or select "hi" ride height.

I’m in the same boat with you I always hear it kick on slight buzz with slight vibrations wonder if we could swap out the old isolators for new ones that are the same size
