" check the connection of the air conditioner"
Months ago that message on the nav screen was very infrequent and it disappeared quickly.
I’d see it when all the climate control buttons on the dash and on the nav screen were locked up.
Now its been that way for several days...thankfully the defroster setting it was in when it locked up is still functioning.
The navigation part of the nav unit no longer works. Radio rarely works properly...if at all.
Is the nav unit itself the issue?
I do have a used nav unit to install.
Thanks,

New MFD not working
My 2004 LS430 ultra is having the exact same issues, one morning the screen was on I was able to go in and set my fan speed. I adjusted my temperature with the temperature button , and my nav was also working . 15 mins later, the button controls for climate , nav and everything else around the mfd locked up on me and screen shows “ external system is not connected” and “ check connection for air conditioner”. Please help, I purchased a new unit , tested it out in my friends 04 ultra and it works , plugged the new one into my car , it wouldn’t work , end of the night we pulled the one he had in his car, put it into my car , still didn’t work , both of these units work and still can’t get to the menu screen and buttons are still locked up. I have searched every where and almost everyone says the same thing , get a new unit or send it off to have it repaired, here we have both working order units , still won’t work in my car. Any one else found other solutions to this problem?? I didn’t know it was common problem for 2004 LS430 with nav until after I purchased the car. Help please

Sorry to drag up an old post, but it helped me fix the issue. My drop down panel did not work either. All fuses had power, but decided to replac the gateway, (the fuse box behind the glove box) and all the issues went away. Connection to the ac was restored, and drop down now works. I hope this helps.
Congrats on getting it fixed and letting us know.
