Is this a normal feature?
I have a 2005 with the smart key. This one feature has me baffled and I am trying to see if this is "normal"
When the car is running and I step out with the smart key in my pocket, If I try to open any of the other doors the keyless entry function does not work. The unlock button on the remote does not unlock the door either and I end up having to go back to the drivers door to hit the unlock button. Everything works great if the car isn't running.
Do you guys experience the same? I really need to access the rest of the doors when the car is running. Is there a way of turning this off?
Thanks!

If you hate that, you should try getting out of the car with the gear shift in neutral (parking brake on). It really gets pissed then, lol.
You guys can flame me if you want but I leave my car running, in neutral, with parking brake on, when I fill up for gas ( unless theres a slope then I put in park). For me this serves multiple purposes. Prevent extra wear on the transmission parking pawl and bands, less cycling of the key switch/engine starter, steering wheel doesnt have to retract and then extend (only if you turn the key switch off all the way).
The Sams Club gas station **** yells at me sometimes but thats about it. No check engine lights from leaving the gas cap off for a couple minutes or anything.
As far as your question, I think my 06 works the same way you described but will check later today.
Could you hit the unlock before you get out?

Yeah +2 for following some basic common sense and law...
For OPs question I can say that this behavior with the key also applies to the non-smart key LS 430's. The car will be running with one key in the ignition and I press the unlock button on my second key but does nothing. From what I know there's no way to change this.
