Default Seeking advise - oil leak

Hello everyone,
I purchased a one owner 2005 ls430 with 144,000 on the clock. The TB was done at 88,000 miles. I recently noticed a oil leak and a burning oil smell. I took the ls to my mechanic and he says the crank seal is leaking and the valve cover gaskets need to be replaced. He wants to replace the TB when he makes the repairs on the seal and valve cover gaskets. My question is should the TB need to be replaced?

Thanks,

TB isn't scheduled to be replaced for until you hit 178K. If you are going to pay him to replace the crank seal it probably wouldn't cost you that much more to get the belt changed now. How much does he want extra to change the belt?

The burning oil smell is probably coming from the valve cover gaskets. You could simply take a socket and see if you can snug down the valve cover bolts to see if that stops the leak. Doesn't cost you anything to try...

Gronemus makes a valid point. The valve cover bolts are notorious for coming loose. Also as the crank seal is hidden behind a timing pulley, a crank sensor plate, a plastic cover, AND the harmonic balancer it's difficult to know for sure if it is leaking without removing about a dozen parts from the front of the motor. If the valve covers are leaking near the front that oil will eventually end up accumulating, via gravity, around the area of the crank seal. I would want to know with absolute certainty, by ruling out any and all sources of oil leakage, that the crank seal is leaking before I spent $450 in labor to replace a $10 seal. If you're not losing noticable amounts of oil I wouldn't rush into any major repairs. The valve cover gaskets must be leaking or he wouldn't suggest replacing so start there and re assess after a week or so...

Thanks Gronemus, and bradland for the advice. I had to go and purchase a swivel and a flexible extension to get the job done but I no longer have a leak.total cost $25.72 for the tools..
Thanks again,

Glad you handled the matter yourself and saved a ton of money. Have the crank seal replaced when the car is ready for it's next timing belt service.

Just a quick note- the valve cover bolts are rated at a VERY low torque of 53 in. lbf (yes that's INCH which converts to 4.4 ft.lbf). If you used a 3/8" drive ratchet you probably over torqued them. No need to run out and buy a small torque wrench that measures in.lbs but you might want to go back and double check. Over torqueing can crush the gasket making the leak more serious than before.

Yes, I saved a ton of money doing it myself and thanks for the help. I used a 3/8 ratchet I didn’t think to look up torge settings, Well now I plan to do the valve cover gaskets myself if they ever start leaking again.Wow, if you purchase the right tools for the job you can get the job done.

Thanks,
