Retrofit radar cruise control, possible?
Hello all, recent LS430 owner, i was wondering if retrofitting radar cruise would be a possibility? i'd very much pay the 500 USD worth of both front sensors but i wouldn't know if it's futile.

I've wondered the same thing since Toyota/Lexus has long been known to install optional components into all vehicles but leave out key pieces to complete the system. Makes sense from a production standpoint.
I'll be interested in finding out too.

$500 won't even buy the different grill for an LS430 with radar cruise control - retail price is close to $1,000. The radar unit alone has a retail price of $6,127.08.
It's amazing how the price of similar components have been driven down over the years as these features have become standard on all vehicles made by Toyota. For example, the retail price of the radar unit for the current Toyota Camry is only $405.10.

Slightly off topic, but is it possible to use an aftermarket emblemless grille with the radar sensor either by relocating the sensor or otherwise? If not, is it possible to downgrade to the laser only type to keep it in the lower bumper?

My guess is no for liability purpose. Can you imagine the lawsuit if one can install the radar, run it at 70mph and plowed into someone because the radar is not working properly. They can sue the owner/installer and Toyota for allowing this to be retrofitted.
And if it is possible, the cost is probably so high that it is cheaper to sell the car and buy one with radar.

I was more meaning starting with an Ultra Luxury that had the radar cruise control, can you change the front grille to a logoless one and keep the Radar functional.
or if not is it possible to plug and play the laser sensor to at least have that functionality

I’d also guess you’d need some new computer bit that processes the signals coming in from laser vs radar. Don’t forget with radar it includes all the pre-collision stuff which no doubt wouldn’t transfer over but might throw errors if bypassed

IIRC, it’s available above 25mph or something close to that. I use my radar somewhat regularly and there’s usually a large gap between. The biggest gap setting will slow you down when the guy in front of you is maybe 5 car lengths ahead (the manual has those distances in it too). That’s too much for me, I use the middle setting usually and it seems like 3 car lengths or so.
