Does that cubby open and close every time you slap the phone on it?

No, but if I hit a big pothole, sometimes it will open partway.
That said, I Don't "slap the phone on it" as I have mechanical sympathy and don't abuse my electronic devices 😁😎

slapping it on i meant when you get the phone close to the magnet it kind of grabs it and makes a bit of a clapping sound, at least mine did, but then again, i had huge magnets as i liked my phone to stay put

I kinda assumed ya did. 🤣
No, it can do if I kinda "throw" the phone and allow the magnet to catch it, but the cubby requires a push to open it, so if you just place the phone on the magnet it doesn't open.
I first tried sticking the mount to the CD cover, but it's too flimsy to take the weight.
Also considered the ashtray cover, but settled on the cubby cover.

I for one HATE that car companies and aftermarket companies make products that HELP WITH DISTRACTED DRIVING. Bluetooth should be banned, hands free calling should be banned. An immobilizer should be the only device on a car for cell phones. Once the car is shut off, you can have cell service again. Hate this world.

Ban the radio, ban air-con controls, ban women in short skirts, ban that sweet custom car you saw.
All of these will distract a driver much the same as a cellphone will.
It's up to the driver to use them sensibly, but unfortunately many people don't have any sense and feel that they can do whatever they want regardless of the consequences to them and to others.
I use handsfree, but never argue and keep the call short.
My cellphone also plays my music and provides traffic info via Google Maps.
Do I let it distract me? No I don't, and the same goes for the radio, skirt, hotrod, etc.

Well, FINALLY, I found what I needed!

A flat magnetic panel that I can stick to ANY flat surface - no vents, no slots!

except there is no flat surface space to stick it on other than from cd changer cover down and shifter area in the LS430
and if you do stick it anywhere in those areas then you won't be able to see the screen at a decent angle, if you were to use it as GPS or to see who's calling you
i need it to be adjustable
