Default (Video) 2004 LS430, steering shaft play at firewall

Any idea how to fix this? tried the zip tie trick, it works well enough, but i hate to have to keep getting under there and adding grease to keep it from making squeaking noises. I wonder if it is the firewall bearing, or something in the engine bay that just needs a shim/tightening. play is visually almost imperceptible but you can see it jiggling slightly. it's not the U-joint in the footwell. sound is coming from the firewall.

Also check to make sure the number of bolts (circled in red) are torqued down properly.

Agree with RKW and you might even replace them. Some members have reported positive results doing so
as the simple act of loosening to re torque can wear the knurling slightly...

And to add to this, especially keep in mind that the bolt RKW and bradland posted was superseded by Lexus because the original bolt apparently wasn’t up to the task

Noted! Thanks! I'll try replacing these before I move any further . I was also gonna try out the daizen steering rack bushings. As they are only 40 bucks, I figure, why not. These all look like the same bolt part number, is that correct? You don't happen to have the superceded part number do you?

You’ll love the Daizen bushings. One of the best things I did to my car

I keep hearing that.. can you describe the benefits? it doesn't introduce any undesirable vibrations at all?? If not, it seems like a no-brainer

Replace steering column with low mileage part and pray. I have spent alot of time on this to no benefit and I think there is a fixed gear in the column its easier to get new column. Good luck and or sell car
